Description
@Ziff/J 3 'mm' JUN 21 1870 @met litre,
THoMAsoBRIEMo'F QUINOY., MICHIGAN.
y Leners Patent No.1`o4,o34, dazed Jane 21, 1ero.
i Bei'tknown that I, TnoMAs OBlmm, of` Quincy, 1in the county of Branch and State ot' Michigamhave invented a. newand useful Improvement in the Con-` struction of the Runnin gsGear. for Oarriages; and I do i declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference `being had to the laccompanying drawing and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, and being partofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of myimproved running-gear;` Figure 2 is a sideelevation ot' thesame i Figure 3 is an enlarged eross-scetion through the center oi'- the fore axle.sl|owing the manner ot'iconnecting the reach therewith;- AVFigured: isa front elevation ot' the fore axle; and Figure 5 is an enlarged cross-section through the middleiof thefront bolster and spring, to show the construction and operation 'of their trucklplates.
i. Similar letters ot' reference, indicate corresponding paitsin euch figure. 4
Thenature of this invention relates to au improved construction of the running-gear of carriages and wagons, and consists in a novel and peculiar method ot'- connectng the reach with the fore axle by-means off a clip embracing itscentcr, to which clip the reach is `pivoted; in the peculiar construction and arrange- 4ment of the truck-plates in connection with the springbar and the front spring, and the method of connecting i Vthem securely together; andin the construction and arrangement of the several parts of my device.
`Arepresents the fore, and B the rear aule of a vchiele, connected by the reach O, the rear end of which is rigidly secured to the rear agde, while `the frontend is pivoted to a clip, D, `which embraces the middle of theiiore axle, dispensing with the ordinary king-bolt passing through the axle, to its great detriment.
Eis the circle, so called, but which is a scmieiron segment, having its ends halved vor tenonerl in the ends of ,the wooden bed-piece of the front axle, while its body moves in and is supported by a clip, F, on the under side of the reach.
, By extending theends` of the circle to the shoulders of the fore axle, the latter is rendered -less liable to fracture from a sudden strain at the center, `for under such circumstances the axle will give a trifle, when the strain is transferred to the clip F and. reach, through the circle, relieving the center clip on the aule.`
E* is the circle-iron, on the under side thereof. The ends `ofthe iron are extended beyond the wooden circle gin the forni of a box, a, in which the square shoulder Aof the axle rests. f i
G is the crotch, in form similario the circle E, with its ends in likey manner 'secured tothe endsv of the bed piece of the rear axle, while its body is secured to the under side of the reach.'
b, embracing `the shoulders ot' the rear axle, while their front ends are secured to the reach. This arrangement of the-crotch and its irons brings the strain of the draft on the axle'at the peint` where it is needed, and where the axle is best able to bear it, i. e., as near the wheels as possible, while the boxes a b ot' the irons resist` thev tendency ofthe axles to roll or wrench from their seats in sinking into holes on a .rough road.'
H are the spring-porches, in whose upper ends are suspended the semi-'elliptic springs I. The bases of theperches lie along the top of the bed-pieces, cach draft-clip, d, nea-r the shoulder ot' the axle, tc which the pole or thills are attached, a plain clip replacing the latter in the rear axlen A lateral projection ot' the pcrch-body overlapsthe ends of the circles, to which it is secured by proper bolts.4
^' J' is the rear spring-bar, rigidly secured to its'slll'ilg,
and
K is the front spuug-bar, pivotsd by a holt, e, through the front spring." y Secured to a block on top of the front spring is n circular truck-plate, f, and to the lower side of the spring-bar a corresponding plate, f', through both of which the bolt e passes. The plate f has a front and rear clip, overlapping and hooking under the edge of the lower plate, which eiieetually prevents the bolt ye from .being bent, or the bar from being wrenchcd oil' by a sudden joit of the Vehicle.
It` will readily be seen that the construction, ns above described, of the running-gear, greatly increases its strength and durability, while thc weight and cost are correspondingly diminished.
lI claim 1.` The' pivot-clip D, for connecting thc reach C with the front axle, as described.
2r The construction and arrangement of the pivot lip D, circle E, circle-iron E', and boxes a', crotch Gf, crotch-irons Gr, and boxes b, porches I-li, and clips c d, truekgplatesff, and heh; c, with the sprin .f 's K J, springs I, axles A B, reach O, and clipli,
tially :is described, for the purposes specified.
