INVENTOR WITNESSES Eda/cud JFr ATTORNEYS EDWARD J. FRY, OF JEANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3,1912.
Application filed November 6, 1911. Serial No. 658,701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. FRY, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jeannette, in the county of Westmore land and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and my invention aims to provide a quick acting monkey wrench having an adjustable jaw that can be easily and quickly shifted and positively locked relatively to the shank of the wrench.
The invention further aims to provide a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive'to manufacture, easy to assemble and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
The invention still further aims to accomplish the above results by a combination of elements that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 1s a horizontal sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of a detached gripping lever.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross section and having the outer end thereof provided with a fixed jaw 2. The inner end of the shank 1 terminates in an enlarged handle 3 provided wit-h a flat face 4 in a plane with the front side of the shank 1. The flat face 4, adjacent to the outer end of the handle 3, is provided with a row of transversely extending equally spaced slots 5. The length of each of the slots 5 is the same as the width of the flat face 4. Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a jaw 6 having an opening 7 providing clearance for the shank 1. The front side of the jaw 6 has an inwardly extending body 8 provided with a longitudinal slot 9 which extends from the jaw 6 to the end of the body 8. The length of the body 8 is such that it will always project upon the flat face 4 of the iandle 3. Pivotally mounted in the slot 9 )y a transverse pin 10 is the flat tongue 11 )f a gripping lever 12. The tongue 11 is lush with the outer edge of the lever 12 and is further disposed centrally with respect to the outer end of the lever 12 so as to provide a ledge surrounding the inner terminus of the tongue 11, the latter at its outer end is provided with an opening 13 to receive the pin 10. The lever 12 has a flat face 14 to engage the flat inner face 4 of the handle 3. The fiat face 14 of the lever 12, at the outer end thereof, has a transverse tooth or rib 15 to engage in one ofthe slots 5. The tooth 15 extends across the entire width of the inner face 14 and obtains a firm purchase in the handle 3 when the lever 12 is closed upon said handle. The lever 12 is of the same length as the length of the handle.
To retain the lever 12 in a closed position, the body 8 has the front side thereof, adjacent to one edge, provided with a pivoted latch 16 retained in engagement with the body 8 by a screw 17. The latch 16, inter mediate the ends thereof, has a finger piece 18 and the free end of said latch is adapted to engage under a hook-shaped keeper 19 carried by the body 8 at the opposite edge from that of the screw 17. With the latch 16 under the keeper 19, the lever 12 is held in a closed position upon the handle 3 and the jaw 6 cannot slide or slip while a nut or other object is being rotated by the Wrench.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is1- A wrench comprising a shank having an enlarged handle at one end formed with a rounded and flat side, said flat side having its forward portion formed with a row of transverse slots, a jaw slidably mounted upon the shank and formed with a relatively long bifurcated extension permanently projecting upon and of the same width as the said flat side, a lever having a rounded and a flat side, the latter being of the same width and adapted to abut against the said flat side of the handle, said lever having an enlarged forward end provided centrally with a relatively long flat tongue projecting between the arms of said extension, means for pivotally connecting the free end of said tongue and the arms of said extension together in proximity to said jaw, the enlarged forward end of said lever being per manently spaced from the inner end of said extension, a transversely extending tooth integral With the flat side of the lever and capable of engaging in said slots for maintaining the adjustable jaw from movement, a latch having one end pivotally connected to the front edge of one of said arms, a handle projecting centrally formed at rightangles With said latch intermediate its ends and an angle-shaped keeper integral with the front edge of the other of said arms for maintaining the latch in closed position, 19 and a jaw fixed to the outer end of said shank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
