To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT N. CHRISTIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Fans, of which the following is a specification.

My invent-ion relates to improvements in automatic fans and air circulators, and has for its object to provide simple and convenient means whereby the air above a bed may be cooled and caused to circulate.

My invention consists principally of a series of flat horizontally disposed and spaced strips of flexible material arranged above a bed, said strips to have a vertical movement at one end; my invention consists further in several novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure l is an end view of a bed showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

In carrying out my invention, I use several (preferably four) strips A of flexible material, such as muslin, said strips being attached at one end to the bar B which is to be attached to the head bar B of the bed by hooks C. The opposite ends of the strips are attached to a rod D which is disposed above the foot of the bed. A clamp E is secured to the foot rod I) at about its center, said clamp being also secured to the upper end of a vertical bar F which is in turn attached to a pitman G carried by the wheel I-I mounted on a standard I supported on a base board J. The standard I has, the guides a' i through which bar F reciprocates when actuated by the pitman or connecting rod G. The drive wheel I-I is driven by a belt K connected up to the small electric motor L rigidly secured to the base board J as shown in Fig. 1. portion of said board may extend beneath the bed, so as to be out of the way.

From the above it will be seen that I provide a simple and eflicient device to produce cool currents of air above the bed, and which can be easily regulated, and readily attached to any bed.

By using flat strips of flexible material horizontally disposed and spaced, a number of currents of cool air will be caused and add greatly to the efficiency of the device. It is obvious, of course, that my improvement can be used in other places than over a bed, as for instance, in offices, workshops, out door camps, and that it can be readily folded and packed away.

I claim:- Y

In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary support, of a series of iiat horizontally disposed and spaced strips of flexible material, stationarily secured at one end and secured at their opposite ends to a cross bar susceptible of vertical movement, and means for causing an up and down movement of said cross bar.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary support, of a series of flat horizontally disposed and spaced strips of flexible material stationarily secured at one end to the bed, and secured at their opposite ends to a cross bar susceptible of vertical movement, a vertical reciprocating rod secured to said cross bar, and a motor operatively connected with said vertical rod to cause an up and down movement of the, cross bar.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary support, of a frame consisting of end cross bars and flexible flat horizontal spaced strips connecting said cross bars, means for connecting stationarily one of said cross bars to the bed structure, and means for causing an up and down movement of the opposite cross bar.
