To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE WV. BROWN and JOHN J. KENNEDY, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and count-y of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod-Benders, of which the following is al specification.
This invention relates to a rod bender.
It is the object of this invention to provide a device for bending rods, bars and the like at various angles, and which is particularly adapted for use in bending the iron or steel bars employed in reinforcing concrete structures.
Another object is to provide a device of the above character, which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture and eiiicient in operation, and which is so designed that various sized rods o-r bars may be bent to any desired angle.
Other Objects of this invention will appear in the following specilication.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts,
as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View of the invent-ion. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the invention as adapted to being operated by mechanical power. Fig. L1 is a side view at right angles to Fig. 2, showing the operating lever in position below the base plate.
In the drawings A represents a rectangular plate, on the upper face of which is formed a rib or raised portion 2 which is rectangular in cross section and is disposed diagonally of the plate A and terminates at one end in a standard 3, while the other end is bent at right angles to the side face thereof, as shown at A. i
A set screw or bolt 5 extends through the portion l parallel with the inner face of the rib 2 and the upper face of the plate A; the inner end of the bolt 5 bearing against a slidable block 6 mounted on the plate A. The block 6 is designed to be adjusted on the plate A and fixed rigidly against movement thereof by means of a bolt 7, which passes through a slot 8 (indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2) and is screwed into ter end of the block is formed fl with an upwardly extending portion 9, which terminates some distance above the upper face of the rib 2; the portion 9 forming an abutment for the rod to be bent, as will be later described. The end Vertical face of the block 6 and the portion 9 thereon are cut at an angle of 135o in relation to the inner face of the rib 2, forming a wedgeshaped or tapered edge at the point ofl juncture of the end face of the block with the side face thereof, indicated at 10, in Fig. 1.
A bracket 11 is fo-rmed on the standard 2 and, extending vparallel with the end face of the block 6, terminates a short distance therebeyond. Mounted on the underside of the bracket 11 is a right angled lever 12, which is designed to be moved on a plane parallel with the upper face of the plateAby means of a lever 13 which is attached to t-he shaft or pin 14 mounted in the bracket 11 on which the lever 12 is carried.
Mounted on the outer end of the lever 12 is a downwardly extending, vertically disposed spindle 15, on which a roller 16 is revolubly mounted; the roller 16 extending approximately the length of the end face ofthe block 6 and the raised portion 9 thereon.
The plate A is provided with a series of recesses o-r perforations 17, which are disposed to one side ofthe slidable block 6, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be arranged in any desired manner. The perforations 17 are designed to receive the lower end of a loose pin 18 which is intended to be inserted in any one of the perforations and extend at right angles to the face of the late A tO form an abutment to limit the bend of the rods being worked.
In the operation of this invention, the block 6 is adjusted on the plate by means of the bolts 5 and 7 in such position that its end face will be separated from the inner face of the standard 11 a distance approximately the thickness or diameter of the rod to be bent. Graduations 19 may be formed on the upper face of the rib 2 to enable the block 6 to be adjusted in the desired position without fitting it to the rod or using other scales or rules. The block 6 being set in the desired position, the bolt 7 is screwed tightly therein, the head of the bolt bearing against a washer 20 on the Outer face of the rib 2 to clamp the block against the inner face of the rib, and thereby prevent lateralV movement of the former. The bolt 5 is then set so as to contact with the back of the block 6 and prevent longitudinal movement of the block when pressure is brought to bear on the forward end thereof. The rod to be bent is then placed between the end face of the block 6 and the standard 11, with the point at which it is' to be bent on its inner face disposed adjacent to the edge 10 of the portion 9 on the block 6. The pin 18 is then set in one of the perforations 17 located at a point on the plate A a little beyond the line of the inner angle at which the rod is to be bent. The lever 13 is then swung in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, either manually or mechanically.`
This causes the roller 16 to bear against the outer face of the portion of the rod projecting beyond the block 6 and the standard 11. By exerting sufficient pressure upon the lever 13, the bar will be bent over the vertical edge 10 of the block 6 until its inner face contacts with the pin 18 which acts to determine the angle at which the rod is to be bent, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lever 13 being then retracted, the bent rod is lifted from the slot formed between the block 6 and the standard 11. The roller 16 serves to reduce wear and friet-ion as it acts on the outer face of the rod.
It is manifest that the detailed construction and arrangement of the several parts herein described are subject to variations and modifications, as occasions require, therefore we do not confine ourselves to the exact structure here disclosed, and it is understood that such changes in form and arrangement of the parts may be made as will come within the scope of the claims.
In some instances it is desirable to operate the invention by mechanical power, in which event the pin 14 is extended through the base plat-e A and a lever 13 is attached to its lower` end, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The lever 13 is connected to any desired operating mechanism, being here shown as attached to a connecting'rod 21, leading to a rocking arm 22, pivoted at 23 and adapted to be rocked by means ofa piston in a cylinder 24C, which is reciprocated by any suitable power.
If it is desired to bend both ends of a rody at one operation, a pair of t-he benders are spaced a suitable distance apart and are so connected to the arms 22 as to be actuated through the latter in unison.
Having thus described our invention,

A rod bender comprising a base plate, a fixed standard and a diagonal rib on said plate, a diagonal block adjustable parallel with the rib in relation to the standard arranged on the base plate to receive a rod between its end and the standard, means for exerting pressure against a rod to bend it over the end of the block, said means comprising a lever fulcrumed on the base plate, and adjustable means for limiting the bending movement of the rod, including a loose pin, and perforations in the base plate to receive said pin.
2. A rod bender comprising a base plate, a diagonal rib thereon, a slidable block, means for clamping the block against the rib, adjustable means for preventing backward movement of the block, a standard fixed on the b-ase plate, a lever fulcrumed on the base plate, a roller carried by the bent, and adjustable means for xing the angle at which the rod is to be bent.
3. A rod bender comprising a base plate, a diagonal rib` thereon, a slidable block, means for clamping the block against the rib, adjustable means for preventing backward movement of the block, a standard f fixed on the base plate, a lever fulcrumed on the base plate, a roller carried by the le- 9\ ver adapted to bear againstt-he rod to be bent, and adjustable means for fixing the i f angle at which the rod is to be bent, including a loose pin, and perforations in the baseplate to receive said pin.
