B. MERRILL, AND JOSHUAMERRILIJ, or Bosrou, MASSACHUSETTS.
team Patent N6. 104,c2 4, am; June .21, 1870,
IIMIIE'RO'VENIIIINTI. IN: LAMP-BURNERS.
The scheduleroferred to in these Letters Patent and making pautof the same.
Be it known that I, Bonus SrAuLDiNe MERRILL, of Hyde Park county of Norfolk and State of Mas.- sachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Argand and other likeLamp-Burners; andI hereby declare the followingto bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanyiugdrawing, in whicha Figure 1 is a sectional view of an Argand or roundwick burner, made in accordance with ,myiuveution;
Figure Zis a perspective view ofthej chimney-holdmg-springs,; and perforatel base or chimney-rest, detached frdm, theother portions'of the burner.
Figure 3 is a plan ortop view of the removable portion of the burner shown-in fig. 1. r i I My invention relates to Argaud burners, or ronnd wick burners in which a double current of air is employedto feed the flame, andis directed to cbeapem ing and "simplifying the construction ,of the burner, and other oils distilled from petroleum.
i My invention relates, U 'First, to the 'formationof the removable portion of the-burner, or that portion -fwhieh isadapted' to be "slipped on o'r'ofi' the wick t-ubc. I
- Secondly, tothe construction of log springsand the, base g and Thirdly, to meausfor supportingthe chimney upon a seat raised above the? base ofthe burner, for the :purpose hereinafter, stated; and'to thiseud i and to adapting it more perfectly for burning herosene the chilnne'yhold My invention'consistsin'the .combinationiu an Argand burner, inwhich, the; chimney-holding device is removable, with external chimney-springs, of an aunular perforated plate, ,and a sleeve fitting tlie wick'-'- tube, or a tube encircling thewiclctube, the saiu plate extending transversely from the base of "the springs, or from undenthechimney-seat, to the said sleeve, when the external chimney-springs and the transverse annular perforated plateare formedof onepiecc iof 136ml, substantiallyashereinafter shown and set ort Also, in the combination of the foraminons base aiid chimney-springs, of achimney-seatring, arranged within the spaceeneompassed by the springs, and above the foraniinous base, forming a rest-for the chimney which will be raisedabove the perforated base, so as not to interfere with 'theffree passage of the air up through thebase into-theburner.
The manner in which-my invention is "or may be carried into effect will be "readily understood by reference to the accompanyingdrawing.
A is the wick-tube of an Argand burner, the const-ruction of which is too well known to needfurther description. r Around theupper partof the tube, or around a'tube encircling the same, is fitted the removable portion of the burner, consistingof. the chimney-holding springs finished appearance, springs to from a single seamless sheet of metal, which a and perforated base I), which latteri s united with a sleeve, 0, which is the means of holding the'parts in proper position relative to the wick and wick-tube, as shown in the drawing.
.By employing a perforated base or diaphragm, b, to
air which enters the bnrne'rand passes up around the wick-tube to the limbs, this being. an important fea;
tore in Argaud burners used for burning petroleum oils, as the flame is thereby prevented from flickering, the draught is made perfectly even, the air being finely divided and admitted in small streams only,
- In order to manufacture the burner cheaply, and at the same time to render it very durable, and give it a I form the perforated-base I) and isfirst struck up into a suitable cup or dish-form, and
then has its sides cut or stamped 'outto formthe springs a, and its bottom struck up and punched, or otherwisemanipulated, so as to form the annular perforated base I), as elearlyshown'iu fig. 2.
The springs and base are thus formed solidly, and without a seam, fromthe same piece'of metal, and, being produced entirely by machinery, arebetter and much more quickly made, and present a more highly finished appearance, than were they made separately and afterwards soldered together;
The base of the chimney, ifdesircd,'ean rest directly upon the perforated diaphragm b, but in some instances it may be found advisable to allow the whole 'oftheperforated base toremainexposed for the pass age-' of air, and to support the chimney upon a ring or ledge, d, such as-s'hown in the drawing, which is raised above the base,,a'nd supportedin; placeiu any'suit able manner by being soldered or otherwise fastened to the springs orsides of the burner, or by means of a flange which rests .upon the base, the lattermode being representedin the drawing. This ring may-also be inclined a little upward, as shown in fig. 1, so as'to act in some sort as a' deflector, directing the air which enters through the base toward the flame; and I can form upon the ring, projections or ridges 0, upon which the chimney will rest, so as to leave, between the base of the chimney and through which the air can enter burner. There would thusbe two currents of air in the mainportion of the ring, spaces from the sides of the the burner, the one entering above the ring and the other below it, the latter being directed toward the wick by the inclination of the ringl Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into efiect, 'WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an Argand buruer, ii1. which the chimney-holding position, I steadyand regulate the draught, and divide into-fine streams the device is removable, the combination with external ehimne'y-sprin gs, of an annular perforated plate and asleeve fitting the wick-tube, or a tube encircling the wick-tribe, the said plate extending transversely from the base of the springs, or from under the chimney seat to the said sleeve, and when the external chimney springs and the transverse annular perforated plate are formed of one piece of metal, substantially as here- --i'nlsl hown and set forth.-
Also, the eombination, with the foi'aminons base and chimney-springs, of a chimney-seat ring or ledge, ar-- ranged within the space inelosed by tlie springs, and
