Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. OLSON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Soledad, in the county of Monterey, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Socket- VVrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in tools and particularly wrenches, the object of the invention being to produce an adjustable socket wrench in which the jaws may be quickly and accurately adjusted to fit any sized nut and also one in which the same jaw can be made to fit two different kinds of nuts and also a wrench in which the jaws may be readily interchanged for the purpose of engagement with different kinds of nuts.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate the corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the wrench showing one class of jaws installed thereon. Fig. 4 is another end view showing another class of jaws.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the shank or handle of the tool provided with a square end shoulder 2. At the upper end of the member 1 is a socket member 3 having a vertical slot 4 and a recess 5 opening from said slot 4:.
The numeral 6 designates the jaw mem bers which have arms 7 fitting into the slot 4, such arms being threaded upon a right and left threaded screw pin 8 provided with a central collar 9. Secured to the collar 9 by means of a set screw 10 is a wheel 11, which wheel operates through the recess 5 and through slots in the sides of the member 3 and also in slots 13 in the arms 7. In practice turning the wheel 11, turns the screw 8 which operation moves the arms 7 and incidentally the jaw members 6 outwardly or inwardly as the wheel 11 is turned one way or the other.
The numeral 12 designates a pin projected through from one side of the member 3 to the other and through the slot 4 and adapted to prevent the sides of said member 3 from springing during the operation of the tool and incidentally said pin passes between the members 7 to prevent them from being brought too close together so as to fit against the wheel.
In the view shown in Fig. 3, the jaws 6 are shown square and thus they can be used for a square nut or for an octagonal nut according to the position assumed by said members 6.
In Fig. 4 is shown the form of jaw which would be used for a hexagonal nut.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, in practice such deviations from such detailed construction may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A wrench of the character described comprising a handle member substantially round in cross section and provided with a square shoulder at one end, a socket member at the other end of said handle member, such socket member being substantially round in cross section and projecting longitudinally with respect to said handle member, such socket member being provided with a transverse slot, arms movable in said slot, the outer edges of such arms lying normally lying normally flush with the outside of said socket member, as described. 1
