Description
CHRISTIAN G. LEHMANN, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
INCUBATOR.
`Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Dec. 3., 1912.
Application led May 9, 1912. Serial N o. 696,071.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that T, CHRISTIAN MANN, asubject ofthe Emperor of Germany, residing at Detroit, in the county of 5 Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tncubators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements iig incubators and more particularly to mea for regulating the heat for such devices.
The object of the invention is toprovide simple and efficient means operated by the temperature within the incubator for accurately controlling the heating apparatus whereby ,an even temperature is maintained within the incubator and further to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described and particularl y pointed out in the claims reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, in whic A extends across the casing longitudinally thereof near one side, thence across the casing near one end and back the length of the casing to an outlet opening 5 in the top of the casing which opening is controlled by a slide 6. This slide may be moved by the operator to close or open the outlet as de-` sired.
The ue 4 is provided with an outlet 7 outside of the casing 1 and near the vertical portion of the flue which extends downward into the chimney 3 ofthe heater. Adjacent to one side of this outlet 7 is pivoted a damper 9 which is adapted to swin downward across the flue l and close t esame against the passage of heat into the incubator casing. If desired this damper may be turned to close the outlet 7 when the heat 5 passing through the passage 4 will all be forced to pass through the flue into the cas- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section v ing. As shown in Fig. 1 the damper may be set in an inverted position when part of the heat will pass out through the outlet 7 and part will pass the damper and enter the cas ing. The amount of heat entering the incubator may thus be accurately regulated by turning the damper and to so turn the damper and to automatically regulate the heat a thermostat 10 is supported within the chamber of the incubator to engageand operate a lever 11 which is pivoted at 12 intermediate its ends and extends dutward through an opening 13` in the end wall of the casing 1. Secured to the pivot or shaft 14 of the damper 9 lis a lever 15 having a weight 16 at one end and a pointer 17 at its opposite end. A scond lever 18 extends substantially at right angles to the lever 15 with one end engaged therewith and its opposite end -connected to the outer end of the lever 11 by means of a connecting rod 19. The lever 18 is pivoted intermediate its ends at 20 to a suitable supporting bracket on the end of the casing. An indicator plate 21 is adjustably secured to the side of the fiue 4 by means of a screw 22 engaging a curved slot 23 in the plate.- This plate is provided with marks over which the pointer 17 moves. The connecting rod 19 passes through an eye or opening in the end of the lever 11 and is screwthreaded at its lower end to receive an adjustable thumb nut 24 so thatv the length of the rod may be accurately adjusted as desired. y f
As the heat within the incubator chamber increases, the thermostat 10 will be expanded thereby and the lever 11 rocked upon its pivot causing the outer end of the lever to move downward bringing its end into engagement with a nut 24 and pulling upon the rod 19. This'pull upon said rod will Arock the lever 18 upon its pivot 20 and bring its end into engagement with the lever 15 which lever will in turn be lifted, turning the damper 9 downward across the flue and cutting off the passage of the heat from the heater into the incubator chamber. This operation will at the same time be indicated by t-he pointer 17 moving over the graduations on lthe plate2'1.
When the temperature in the chamber of the incubator falls, the thermostat will convtract permitting the inner end of the lever 11 to fall by Jfgravity and its outer end to raduations and indicating The weight 16 will then operate to turn the lever l5 and' swing the damper 9 upward until the downward movement of said lever 15 is arrested by the lever 18 which in turn is held by t-he nut on the rod 24 coming in -contactv with the outer end of the lever 11.
The damper- 9 is thus swung upwardly as the temperature in the casing falls and more heat will be admitted to the casing through the flue.
vThe device maybe set by means of the thumb nut 24 so that it will operate toturn the damper and maintain the temperature in the casing at any desired degree. When the temperature within the casing is normal I'or at the point at which the device is s'et to perate and maintain such temperature, the pointer 17 will be in mid position of the plate orat zero, said plate being adjusted by means of its screw 22 when the nut 24 is adjusted to change the normal degree of temperature within the casing so that when said temperature is at the desired or normal point the pointer will be at zero. Any variation rom the degree of temperature at which the device is set to operate will thereafter be indicated by the pointer 17 being deflected one way or the other from the zero mark.
Obviously, changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts with outl` departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not Wish to limit myself to the particular form or construction shown.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is v 1. Inl an incubator, the combination with a casing, an air flue extending horizontally into and across the casing and provided with an outlet through the top of the casing, a
heater connected to the outer end of the air flue outsideof the casing, said air :Hue being provided with an outlet opening adjacent to said end to'which the heater is connected, a vdamper pivoted within the air flue to swing across the same and across the outletopening, a leverconnected to the damper to turn the same and provided with a, pointer, a v
vdamper pivotally supported within the air flue `to be turned across the same and across the outlet opening in said flue, a weighted lever attached to said damper, a lever pivotally supported upon the casing intermediate its ends with one end engaging the weighted lever, a thermostat within the casing, a lever pivoted intermediate its endswith one end engaged by the thermostat, a rod connected to the free end ofthe lever pivotally supported upon the casing and adjustably connected at its opposite end tothe free end of the lever engaged by the thermostat, a
pointer carried' by the damper, and .an indicator plate adjustably supported adjacent to the pointer.
In testimony whereof I atIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
