Description

R. W. MAUDSLAY.
CAPE CART HOOD.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 17, 1912 Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
INVENTDR Fla 2 FIG:
ATTORNEYS WITNESSES item BEGINALD HALTER IYIAUDSLAY, OF COVENTRY, ENGLAND.
CAYE CART-HOOD.
1 ,(VHLQQS. Specification of Application filed January !7, 1912.
'10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, REGINALD lVAL'rEu MA'rosnAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Coventry, in the county of :arwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cape Cart-Hoods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rape cart hoods chiefly for use on motor vehicles, and has particular reference to the side curtains used to fill in the spaces beta-teen the top and the body. Usually such curtains are secured to the hood and to the body by turnbuttons, and they seriously interfere with ass-age through thedoor and in consequence of the difliculty, in fixing and removal they are not used as much as might be the case if a better construction were provided. Such curtains are generally only used when intended to be kept in place for some little time and are very inconvenient when a door has to be used frequently, as for shopping, calling, etc. These.objt' tions are overcome by providing timid/Oil With'a door which is attached to the body door so as to open therewith, and hinged to the hood. the lintel or frame or the curtain fixed by turnlmttonsor the like to the cape hood and to the body. Thus w en the body door is closed the (jllltilll1 tlfi( l' shut and the body 'inelo:-=ed. The curtain opens autoi'natically with the bony door :3 that no ineonvenleiur: is experienced ow, to the side curtain being in use,
in the aco ilii ):iriyin draw is a side elevation of part showing the invention a 0 ,art hood. The door in i as closed. l i a'. Q is a norm-e1 Fig. l but the door is open of olearn-ees thev door on the ol vehicle is omitted. Fig i. a s ot the hood door parts.

edge of this frame to the body. It will be seen that the frame forms three sides of a rectangle, and it may consist of cape hood canvas or other suitable material suitably stitlened. By means of the turnbut-tons 1t can easily be attached or removed.
Hinged to it at D is a panel L which constitutes a hood door and consists of a rectangular frame E containing a suitable celluloid or other transparent light. The hinge I) may be constituted by the flexible material of which the frame may be made. This may be built up of material such as ape hood canvas suitably stiffened, its edge the side D being stitched or otherwise Weured to the lintel A. The hinge I) is arranged in line with the axis of the door hinge F, and the bottom of the window part attached to the door has a turnbutton arranged at G. Thus, as the body door is opened the hood door opens with it. The turnbutton G engages a long slot M in the hood door in case the hinges of the two doors are not co-axial.
The top free corner H of the hood door may have a bias or twist imparted to it so as to cause it to set close to the hood, or it may be held in place by a suitable spring clip which would allow the hood door to open when the body door; is opened, and vice versa.
it will beseen that by this invention the objections to the usual side curtains are ob viated by providing a door and frame for it which is carried by the hood and opens with the body door.
What I claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a vehicle the combination with a body and top carried by said body, a door to said body, an Opening in said top corresponding with the body door, of a flexible door frame, a 'ing'ing door tormedtheueto.
n'zeans for detachably securing said flexible time to the top and means for detachably securing the bottom oi said swinging door to th iody door, substzmtially as (lPSUilllHl.
motor vehicle the combination of l'r a. v i a body, a door to said body, a hood carried by said body, a door for said hood, :1 frame name to this specification in the presence of to WhlCll said hood door 1s lunged, detach two subscrlblng Witnesses. able means for securing said frame to said hood, :1 detachable slotted connection be- REGINALD WALTER MAUDSLAY' tween said hood and said body door substan- Witnesses: tially as set forth. ALBERT BROWN,
In testimony whereof I have Signed mv JOHN RAVEN.
