METHOD OF MAKING SANITARY DRINKING-CUPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flled July 8, 1911, Serial No. 836,615. Renewed August 5, 1912. Serial 30. 718,445.
To all whom 'tt'may concem:
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. Buss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of .Making Sanitary Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in methods for making a sanitary drin 'ng cup and has for its object the provision of an improved method for making such cups.
The invention consists in the method of procedure hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sheets of material employed in the making of the cup with a portion of one of said sheets broken away, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a folded cup with aportion broken away Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofa complete cup" folded for shipment or-transportation, Flg. 4 1s asection of the cup taken'on line vic of- Fig. 3, Fig. dis a perspective view of the form of mandrel employed in forming a cup shown with the sheets of material placed thereover and partially folded, Fig. 6 1s an enlarged horizon al section of the cup taken on.line y-y of Fig. 2 and'indicatmg the mandrel and contact roller employed in making the cup in dotted lines,
and Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical section through one section of a completed cup.
The preferred method of making a cup consists in first providing a rotatable form or mandrel 1 which is made slightly taperlng in form as indicated. Sheets 2, 3 and 4 of water proof paper, such as parafiinpaper.
are arranged as indicated in Fig. 1, sheets 2 and 3 being of the same size and sheet 4.
of smaller size and arranged centrally with reference to sheets 2 and 3 and between I sheets 2 and 3. The sheets of paper are 7 placed over the end of mandrel 1 and folded Then the mandrel is rotated in one direoover the sides thereof as indicated in Fig. 5.
" thereof.
tion' as indicated by, e arrows and a contact roller 5 is applied to said mandrel and .the folds of said sheets of material and revolved in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of said mandrel, and in the same. direction as that in which the folds are laid upon the mandrel as indicated in Fig. 6. This will cause said folds to lie closely against the periphery of the mandrel, and, owing to the fact that roller 5.
moves in the direction relatively to the folds in which said folds arelaid ppon the mandrel, all danger of disturbing said folds is eliminated and the air is readily forced from said folds. After the folds have thus been laid in position, the edgesthereof are trimmed by applying a knife thereto while on the mandrel. The edges of the sheets and folds are then stitched together to re- Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
tain the same in cup form. .If desired a flexihle cover 6 is placed around the cup thus formed and stitched to the @per edge .While I have illustrated and described the preferred method of procedure for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and steps set, forth, but wish to avail myself of such variations andmodifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1 y s5 '1.- The method of making a sanitary Patent is:
drinking cup which consists in folding asheet offlexible water proof material over the end of a ro atable mandrel; then rotate ing said mandrel ,while a contactroller is heldiin contact with the folds of said material and revolved adirection "opposite and then securing said folds in cup form, substantially as described.
2. The method of making a sanitary to the direction of ro ation of said mandrel-,1
