COATING-MACHINE.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. KRONQUEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, Stat-e of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coating-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in coating machines and more -particularly to a machine for applying a sealing composition to a metal part for making an air tight joint when said metal part is rolled into a seam.
An object of the invention is to provide a coating machine which is so constructed and arranged that a coating of sealing material may be applied to the end flange of a can body just prior to the placing of the end thereon and joining to the end of the can body by rolling the flange intoa seam.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coating device of the above character wherein a series of coating rolls operates simultaneously to coat the flange of a can body and said rolls serve as a rest for the can body while it is being coated.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration, one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a. coating machine embodying my improvements Fig. 9. is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a portion of the same, showing a can body in place for coating;

My improved machine, as illustrated in the drawings, consists of a tank 1 which is supported by suitable legs 2 and this tank is adapted to contain the coating material which is indicated at C. Extending upwardly centrally of the tank is a bearing 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

and a shaft l extends up through said bear 'ing and rotates therein. This shaft a is rosleeve 12, carried by the rotating support 9.
Each shaft 11 carries a gear wheel 13 which meshes with a rack 14. This rack 14 is in the form of'a ring and said rack is held from movement by being fixed to the tank. Screws. 15 extend through the tank into the rack for holding the same from movement on the tank.
As the support 9 rotates, the gears 13 running on the rack will cause the rolls 10 to rotate. As above noted the rolls 10 are each in the form of a cone and they are so located that the apex 16 of each cone is located substantially at'a line containing the axis of the shaft 4. The rolls 10 are so proportioned that the upper side of each roll lies in a horizontal plane containing the apex of the roll. The tank l is provided with a coating material which extends to a point well above the lower parts of the rolls 1() but this coating material does not quite cover the upper surface of the rolls. The tank is closed by a plate 17 which is formed with an opening 18. This opening exposes 'the rolls 10.
My improved coating machine is especially adapted for coating the end Iiange of a can body. The can body is indicated in the drawings at B and this can body is formed with a flange F. The bottom of the can body is indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, at B. Said can end is curled at its outer edge and this outer curled edge is rolled into a seam with the flange F of the can body. This is what is known in the art as a double seam.
It is essential in the making of cans for certain uses that a sealing composition be used which should be rolled into a double seam, in order to make a perfect seal, directly after the sealing material is applied to the metal. It often happens that comparatively few cans are to be made of a certain size and then cans of another size and `my improved machine is especially adapted for the applying of a sealing material which is to be rolled at once in'to a double seam, joining the can end to the can body and wherein the can body may be presented to the coating machine by hand.
The end of thecan body, to which the can end is to be attached is inserted 'through the opening 18 and placed into engagement with the coating rolls l0, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. All of the coating rolls simultaneously engage the flange F and as they are rotated they serve 'the double function of supporting the can while it is being coated and of coating the entire flange on the can body. As
soon as the flange has been coated then the can end may be placed thereon and the can presented to a double seaming machine wherein the can end is rolled in'to a double seam with the flange on the can body.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A coating machine for cans, including in combination, a series of radially disposed coating rolls arranged to simultaneously engage and coat the end flange of the can body.
2. A coating machine for cans, including in combination, a tank adapted to contain vport rotates, said rolls being shaped and disposed so as to extend above the surface of the sealing material and form a rest and coating surface for supporting and applying-a coating to the end flange of a can body.
4. A coating machine for cans, including in combination, a tank, a vertical shaft eX- tending into the tank, a support carried thereby, a series of cone-shaped rolls mounted on the support and having their upper faces located ina horizontal plane, a gear carried by each coating roll, a fixed rack engaging the gears for rotating the rolls as the support rotates.
