The a paratus, as shown, comprises a hood 1, constituting a combustion chamber, combined with an adjustable air intake tube 2, which serves as asupport for a fluid fuel appliance consisting of a burner 3, and a fuel chamber 11.' Hood 1, is conveniently of circular form in cross section and preferably provided with a fiat top Wall 1, and a fiari ing end portion as 10, terminating in an annular vertical base flange 11. In applying the apparatus to a stump, solid fuel is placed about the stump or against one side thereof, and such protruding root portions as wouldvinterfere with a level seating of the hood are notched to receive flange 1 1, as indicated in Fig. 1. The applied fuel may now be ignited and the hood then placed in'position over the stump, or the hood may be rst placed and the re Athen started through the medium of burner 21. In the` latter event, valve 6 is opened with tube 2 suitably inclined for flow of fluid fuel from chamber 4 to the burner 3, where it is ignited upon escaping from the burner tip 3. The tube is then inserted in one of the side openings, in the top of the hood, to position the burner, as may befound desirable, and collar 15 applied to said opening. Tube 2 may now be shifted in collar 15 to carry burner 3 to various points or to direct the angular extremity of the tube for delivery of air to promote combustion of the solid material inclosed by the JOE SMITH.
