Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRIDOLIN SCHIMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Faribault, county of Rice, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Proof Pads for Sandpapering and Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a presser foot or pad for use on sanding, abrading or polishing machines, for polishing and finishing woodwork where a high finish is desired, and has for its object the production of a pad or presser foot so constructed that the dust is prevented from entering between the flexible portion of the pad. Heretofore, much diii'iculty has been experienced due to the dust accumulating between the canvas and the felt which causes ridges in the finished surface of the work.
The foregoing and other features of my invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying one sheet of drawings, forming part of the specification, in which I have represented my dust-proof pad in its preferred form, after which I shall point out more particularly in the claims those features which I believe to be new and of my own invention.
Figure 1 is a top view of my pad. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is the detail of the engaging means for the canvas covering.
In my invention I employ a rectangular member 1 provided on one end with a clamping device 9. On the opposite end is a spring compressed clamping device 3. Secured to the member 1 I provide strengthening crosspieces et which are adapted to be attached to the operating plungers or contacting device of any sanding, abrading o-r polishing machine. As there are well known machines on the market a further description is thought to be unnecessary and further because I make no claim in this application to these contacting devices.
Attached to the bottom of the rectangular member l I provide a felt over which a specially prepared canvas 6 is stretched and tightly held by means of the spring compressed clamping means 3 and the clamping means 2. The member 1 is grooved along the sides so as to receive the long side of the metal member 8 which is bent over on itself forming a channel 9. This member 8 is so positioned that no part depends below the plane surface of the pad 5. As will be readily seen by referring to Fig. 2, the canvas 6 is adapted to be held up against the pad 5 by these channels 9 which are continuous throughout the length of the member l. As will be readily understood the canvas can be easily removed when desired by loosening the clamping means and sliding the material out from engagement of the channels.
I wish it distinctly understood that my dust-proof pad herein illustrated and described, is in the form in which I desire tov construct it and any changes or modifications may be made wit-hout departing from the salient features of my invention and I therefore intend the following claims to cover such modiications as naturally fall within the lines of invention I claim:
l. In a flexible pad, a rectangular me1n ber provided with a cushion on one face; two metallic strips, set into the long edges of the said member, bent so as to form a channel on each side; a stationary clamping means on one end, and a flexible clamping means on the other end of the rectangular member.
2. In a flexible sander pad, a body provided with a cushion on one face, a covering over the cushion, means for securing the covering to the body under tension, means on each side of the body to closely hold the covering over the cushion throughout the length of the body.
