UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARoELLUs s. SMITH AND MELANoTHoN E. WEIGHT, or INDEPENDENCE,
MIssoUEI.
NOISELESS BLVACKBOARDv-ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,534, dated March 18, 1890.
Application tiled November l5, 1889. Serial No. 330,318. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, MAECELLUS S. SMITH and MELANOTHON R. WEIGHT, of Independence, Jackson county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Noiseless Blackboard-Erasers,` 'of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention has for its object to provide a new and improved eraser more especially designed for cleaning or removing chalkmarks from blackboards, and which shall be noiseless, which, it is obvious, is a desideratum, particularly in schools, where such is mostly and continuously in use, while it is durable and inexpensive and remains intact until entirely used up, not requiring the re- Inoval or renewal of any part from rst to last; and it consists of the novel detailed construction of the same, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustration, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved eraser. Fig. 2 is a sectional View thereof; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification of the same, being in a single piece.
In accordance with our invention we preferably take two more or less) thicknesses or layers" of felt A or analogous material, which, while adapted more particularly to remove chalk-marks from a blackboard, shall be noiseless, either by contact with the latter in use or in event of falling from the hand of the user to the ioor, and unite said thicknesses or layers of felt in a firm compact manner by quilting or sewing or wiring them together. Simultaneously, however, with'the uniting of the layers or thicknesses of felt A we apply to the outer surfaces of the outer layers leather backing-pieces B or other comparatively hard but exible material of less di- Inensions than said layers of felt, through which the stitches of thread or twine, or the wire, or other suitable binding medium securing said layers or thicknesses are also passed, and thus provide. the eraser with backs.
The operation or process of sewing or wiring the aforesaid parts together is designed to be effected or conducted so as to embed or sink the backing-pieces B B into the felt A, thus causing the latter to stand outward beyond the plane of said backing-pieces and to form a continuous or unbroken marginal portion a., which thus not only projects or stands beyond the edges of said backs, but also beyond the outer sides thereof, thereby removing the backs from contact with the surface or board cleaned, or upon which the eraser is being used, and from contact with the Iloor in event of the eraser falling thereon, all noise thus being `wholly avoided. This, as above inti- `mated and as is obvious, is greatly desirable,
especially in schools as well as other places;
As shown in Fig. 3, the eraser may be produced of a single piece of felt or analogous material of the requisite thickness for expedition in use and convenience in handling, the same being solidly compressed or compacted, and either quilted or not, and it may have only one leather piece or back, or none, as desired.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I A noiseless blackbo rd-or chalk eraser consisting of one or more layers of felt or analogous material having two backing-pieces of leather or other comparatively hard but flexible material on their outer sides, and of less dimensions than and embedded in said layers or thicknesses of felt, and stitched together or drawn together by wire or other suitable medium, whereby a continuous outstanding Inarginal portion of felt will surround said backing-pieces and prevent the contact of the latter with hard surfaces, thereby preventing noise which would otherwise occur, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
