a citizen of the United States, residing in i Hasbrouck Heights, county of Bergen, and 1 State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a description.

My invention pertains to that class of lighting fixtures used for the support of incandescent lamps and distribution of light given thereby;

My invention has for its particular object to support an electric lamp and hold a shade or reflector in proper operative relation thereto in such manner as to direct the rays in a desired direction.

A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the shade may be clamped in a given relation with respect to the lamp and held rigidly in this position and also to be readily removed by proper manipulation when desired. In the drawing Figure I is a vertical section and partial elevation of a fixture embodying one form of my invention. Fig. II is avertical section and partial elevation of a fixture embodying a modified form of my invention. Fig. III is a perspective of one of theparts of my improved fixture shown in section in Figs. I and II as will hereinafter be more plainly explained.

In Fig. I, 1 represents any suitable type of bracket or other support provided with the depending threaded nipple 2 upon which is threaded an ornamental bonnet 3 provided at its lower portion with a flange which is preferably knurled so as to be easilyv turned.

The lower portion of the fingers 8 is so shaped that when pressed inwardly by a downward movement of the conical member 6 of the member 5 they will fitinto the flange 9 of the top of the shade 1O intended to beheld by the fixture as shown in Fig. I. 11 represents the incandescent lamp or bulb supported by the socket. 13 which is screwed into the internal bore 12 of the bracket or other support 1 through which bore the wires are led to proper connections within the socket 13.

Referring to Fig. II in which like numerals are used to indicate like parts it will be noted that the device shown in F ig. II is the same as that shown in Fig. I with the exception that the loose spun bonnet memher 5 is omitted and the member 3 is so shaped as to have an internal onical bore adapted to press the fingers-8 into the flange 9 of the shade 10 when the bonnet J is moved in a downward direction as by being screwed downwardly on the threaded portion 2.

The operation or" my improved invention is substantially as follows :Referring to Fig. I and starting with the shade in place and the various parts shown in the position shown in the drawing, if it be desired to clamp the shade a little more firmly in the fixture. the flange 4 may be turned in such direction that the member 3 will move downwardly upon the threaded'portion 2 and press the member 5 downwardly and crowd the flange portion 6 upon the fingers 8 and force the same more tightly into the flange 9 of the shade 10. If itbe desired to remove the shade the fiange 4 may be grasped and the member 3 rotated so as to move upwardly uponthe threaded portion 2 until the member 5 may be raised so that there will be sufficient room between the fingers 8 and the inside of the conical portion 6 that the shade may be sprung out of the fingers 8 in a well-known manner. The shade may readily be replaced by springing the same in place under the fingers again and then the bonnet 5 may be dropped upon the fingers and if the member 3 be screwed down firmly the shade will be held rigidly in place.

Referring to F II andstarting with the parts in the positions shown in the drawing, if it be desired to more firmly grip the shade the flange 4 may be readily grasped by hand and the member 3 turned in such direction that it will move downwardly upon the threaded portion 2 and thus owing to the conical shape of its inner surface force the fingers 8 more tightly into the flange 9 of the shade. If, however, it be desired to remove the shade the member 3 may be rotated so as to move upwardly upon the threaded portion 2 until sufficient clearance is left between the fingers 8 and the interior of the member 3' that the shade 10 may be sprung-out in a well-known manner. The

From the foregoing it will be obvious that I have produced a lighting fixture adapted to hold an electric lamp in place and firmly hold a shade in operative relation thereto in such manner that the same will not rattle when the fixture is subjected to severe vibration as when used in railway cars. Further, the various parts of my improved fixture remain at all times in operative relation and no parts have to be removed during the process of taking out or putting in shades and thus the danger of loss during this process is avoided.

It will also be noted that my improved fixture is of such type as will permit of ornamental design inasmuch as the shade engaging parts are practically concealed by an ornamental bonnet.

.I do not wish in any way to limit myself to the exact constructions or modes of opera- .tion set forth in the above description for it is obvious that considerable change in the form of fixture may'be made without departing from the spirit of my invention which is as set forth in the-following claims:

1. A lighting fixture comprehending means for supporting a source of illumination, combined with means for support-ing a shade in operative relation thereto comprehending ylelding shade ripping and supporting means and movable means which operates the said yielding means, both independently supported by the first mentioned means. I

2. A lighting fixture comprising means for supporting a source of illumination; and means for supporting a shade in cooperative relation to said supporting means, comprising shade gripping means carried by the first mentioned means, and movable means carried by the first mentioned means covering said shade gripping means and adapted to close the same upon said shade.

3. In a lighting fixture comprising means for supporting a source of illumination, the combination with a source of illumination and a shade in operative relation thereto, of means for supporting said shade comprehending a yielding gripping member directly attached to said firstmentioned means, and movable means attached directly to said first mentioned means and adapted to press said yielding gripping means against said shade.

4:. A lighting fixture means for supporting a source of illumination, and a shade in operative relation there to, flexible shade gripping meansattached directly to the supporting means, a movable member mounted directly upon said. sup porting means and adapted by its motion to operate the yielding shade gripping means.

A lighting fixture comprehending a comprehending member adapted to support a source of lllu- T mination, yielding shade gripping and-supporting means attached to said supportmg member and a membermovable upon said supporting member and; adapted to operate the gripping member.

6. A lighting fixture comprehending a member adapted to support a source of illumination, a yielding member attached to the first named member and adapted to grip a ping means attached to said member; a sliding bonnet arranged upon said member, and

surrounding said means, and provided with an internal conical surface forv engagement with the gripping means and adapted to press the gripping meansupon a shade; and a bonnet rotatably carried by said member above said sliding bonnet, whereby by rotating said bonnet the sliding bonnet may be caused to grip or release a shade.

' 8; A lighting fixture comprehending a nipple having means for supporting a source of illumination; means for supporting a flanged shade in operative relation to said source of illumination, comprising a plurality of flexible gripping fingers directly at-- tached to said nipple; aconical'bonnet covering said fingers and slidable upon said nipple so as to engage and force said yielding members against the flangeof the shade. 9. A fixture having means for supporting a source of illumination; in combination with means for carrying a shade in cotiperative relation to the latter, comprising yielding shade grippingmeans, fixed to said supporting means and surrounding'the latter;

a'member rotatably carried upon said supporting means and surrounding said shade gripping means, and having means for compressmgthe gripping means upon a shade, whereby the movement .of said rotatable member will cause the gripping means to engage or release a Shade.

10. A lighting fixture having a supporting portion, a lamp socket carried thereby, yielding shade gripping means surrounding saidsocket and supported above the same, movable means slidable on said supporting socket and shade.
