NVENTOR.
ATTORNEY@ BENJAMIN F. HAYDEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STOVEPIPE.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, BENJAMIN F. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipes, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in stove pipes, and the object of my invention is to construct a stove pipe joint having' at one of its margins a tapering channel and at one end of the j oint'integral locking devices. At the opposite end of the joint there is pivotally mounted an eccentric locking device whereby to form a conical or tapering joint in order that several joints may be telescopically connected, t-he eccentric locking device'permitting of different degrees ofV telescoping.
Vith the above purposes in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more rfully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l shows in elevation a number of stove pipe joints constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 shows a blank from which one of the joints is formed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail, fragmental view of the seam and locking devices of one of my improved joints; Fig. 4 is a vertical, sectional elevation taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring by numerals to the accompany ing drawings: l designates the blank from which one of my improved joints is formed. Adjacent one of the corners of the blank there is a marginal incision 2 forming a tongue 3. Adjacent the opposite margin and at the same end of the blank there is a slot 4. Adjacent the other end of the blank and the margin opposite the incision 2 there is a perforation 5. At the same end on .either side of a line drawn horizontally and intersecting the perforation 5 are slots 6 which are farther removed from the side margin of the blank than the slot 4.
7 and 8 designate bending lines which are parallel with each other and not parallel with the side margins of the blank. Upon these lines, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, the channeled seam 9 is formed. The channel of g Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 12, 1912.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912. Serial No. 676,956.
t-he seam is arranged to receive the opposite side margin of the blank in the formation of a complete joint and the material of the seam is spaced apart from the body of the blank l a suflicient distance to receive a locking deviceV 10, the locking device being secured by means of a rivet extended through the perforation 5. The locking device l0 is preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and comprises a handle 11 and a cam l2, the outer margin of the cam being concentric to the pivotal point and the inner margin eccentric to the pivotal point.
It is to be observed that the slots 6 aline with the folding line 7 in order that the cam 12 of the locking device may pass through the slots 6, and that the material of the joint between the slots 6 forms a bridge 13 which is engaged by the eccentric face of the locking device in order to draw the ends of the joint together.
In forming a joint, after the seam has been formed as shown in Fig. 5, and the locking device secured in place, the tongue 3 is bent at right angles to the body of the blank and the margin carrying the tongue is inserted in the seam, the tongue 3 is inserted in t-he slot 4 and bent to parallel the major axis of the joint, as shown in Fig. 4. By this means, that is the tongue and slot, 3 and 4, the diameter of one end of the joint is fixed but, by reason of the tapering seam and the eccentric locking device, the diameter of the joint at the other end may vary.
In order that the telescoping of the joints may vary as to length, as shown in Fig. l, it is to be observed that the uppermost joint is telescoped a considerable distance over the adjacent joint and that the second joint is telescoped only a slight distance over the third joint.
By reason of the eccentric locking devices two joints of pipe may be held against lengthwise movements regardless of the degree of telescoping.
I claim:
l. As a new article of manufacture a stove pipe joint having one edge formed with a tapering channel and its other opposite edge plain, the plain edge lying within said channel, means at one end of the joint whereby the diameter of the joint at that end may be fixed, and means at the other end of the joint whereby the diameter of the joint at said other end may be varied.
2. As a neW article of manufacture, a stove pipe joint having a channel on one of its margins only, which channel is open toward said margin, said channel arranged 5 to receive the unchanneled opposite margin of the joint, and means for holding the said margin of the joint in said channel.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. HAYDEN.
