IMPROVEMENT lN APFARAT-US FOR INDICATINQTHE; POSITION or ELEVATORS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent 110,104,535, dated une 21, 1870.-
1'0 all whom it may 0m 7 .Be it known that I, WILLIAM STUART AU- cHI'rIcLo'ss, of the city,co.unty, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Elevator-Indicator; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description th ereofiwhich will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
" The drawing represents a sectional front view .of this invention.
This invention consists in the arrangement of'anindicator-rod extending through'the several stories of a building, and provided with or connectedto suitable indices working over,
scales secured one in each story, in combination with the car or platform of an elevator in such a manner'that the position of sand car or platform can be observed at all times and in every story, and also, if desired, the direction in which the car. or platform moves.
well to its bottom the rod 0 descends ten or twelve inches or any small distance, and vice versa. It is obvious that the object of reducing the motion of the indicator-rod can be eifectedvby various means. In the drawing I have shown a rope, a, which extends from the car over a large pulley, b, and from the shaft of this pulley extends a rope, c, to the indicator-rod, and it. the extreme motion of the car is forty feetand it is desired to reducethe motion of the indicator-rod to one foot the diameter .of the pulley bmust be forty times as large as" that of its shaft, or of that portion of its shaft to which the ropec is connected. The mechanism for reducing .the motion mayyhowever,
consist of racks and pinions," screws and nut, levers, or a worm and screw, or of any other suitable combination of devices which will produce the desired result.
The ndicatonrodextends downthrough the various stories of the building in any convenient place,-aud it carries aseries of indices, .11,
of any convenient. form orshape, which travel over scales e, marked with lines 1, 2, 3, 4, &c.,
to indicate the various stories of-thebniidingr When thecar rises in the well the indicator rod rises also, andwhenever the car stops the indices on the indicator-rod point to the story where the car hasjstopped, so that the posi-' I tion of the car and the direction in which it moves can be observed at all times. The con.- I
nection between the car and the indicator-rod might, however,. be also so arranged that the latterwould receive an intermittent motion, carrying the. indices from one'- mark on the scales to the other; but inthis case the direction in-which the 'car moves could not be observed with the same-convenience as itcan by the arrangement previouslyxdescribed.
The scales 0 may be made in a variety of 5 forms-either flat, as shown, or in 'the form of sleeves surronndingthe indicator-rod, or in the form of dials with indices connected to the rod, so as to receive a revolving motion. The position of the scales and of theindicator-rod will of course be selected as convenience may dictate. v
It fis self-evident that for the rod Ca cord 1 or chain might be substituted without changing theresult.
W hat Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The indicator-rod oreord 0, carrying or opcrating one-or more ihdices, d, in combination with the car or platform B of an elevator, sub: stantially' inthe manner and forthe purpose hereii shownaud. described.
This specification signed by me this 2d day of May, 1870.
