ammo o hereinafter described the claims. I
In the "accompanying drawings: Figure 1 sans or".
I PHILIP F. PILLI NER, OF PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA.
VALVE-SPRIN G COMPRESSOR.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 20, 1912. Serial No. 710,586.
Io all whom it may concern;
B" it known that I, PHlLIP F. PILLINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .and which will most effectually compress the spring of engine valves, and hold the same compressed to allow the key to be -easily removed and replaced.
- A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted so as to give the members the necessary amount of movement, "and provide means for holding the members with the spring compressed. I
With these and'other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangementsof parts as will be more fully and pointed out in is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements in operative position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view .in vertical section through the valve spring and collar plate showing the position of my improved tool thereon. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 showing the position of the lower member of my im proved tool on the valve roller holder adjusting screw. Fig. i is a view in section on an enlarged scale on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the tool members. Fig. 6 is a view in elevation at right angles, to Fig. 1 showing the tool partly in section. Fig. 7 is a view in elevation of the adjusting nut. Fig. 8 is a view in section on the line 88 of Fig. 6,
and Fig. 9 is a plan view of the other tool member.
My improved valve spring compressor comprises two members 1 and 2. The member 1 is provided between its ends with a bifurcated bracket 3 in which a screwthreaded rod 4 is ivotally secured by means of a rivet 5. T is screw 4 is positioned through openings in an enlargement 6 on member 1, and this enlargement 6 is provided with a slot 7 in which a thumb ma 8 is located. This thumb nut 8 engages the .threads of rod 4, and as the thumb nut is of appreciably greater diameter than the Patented Nov. as, 1912.
enlargement it can be readily turned to adjust the members toward and away from each other. Both members 1 and'2 have handles 9' and 10 respectively which. aiford a ready grip for the hand. .The opposite end of member 1 is of general U-shape as shown at 11 forming a relatively wide fork, said fork at its ends on its inner face is provided with inwardl projecting shoulders 12 which are adapted to engage the valve spring collar plate 13. The end of member 2 is provided with a fork 14 which is adapted to straddle the valve roller holder adjust-ing screw 15 between the head thereof, and the ordinary check nut 16 located thereon.
In Fig. 1 I illustrate my improvements in connection with an ordinary spring held valve such as commonly employed on engines of the internal combustion type. 17 represents the valve and 18 the stem having the ordinary coiled spring 19 around the same, exerting pressure against the collar plate 13', and this collar plate 13 held on the stem by means of the key 20, which is projected through a slot in the stem and limits the. movement of the plate. As is customary with plates of this kind, they are dished or recessed centrally so that it requires considerable movement of the plate on the stem to release the key. With my improvements, it is a simple matter to move the plate on the key, because when the parts are in the positionabove explained, a pressure on the handle end of the two members will move the plate onthe stem, and the plate may be held in this position by means of a bail 21. This bail 21 is pivotally connected to a lug 22 on member 1, and is adapted to receive and hold the handle 10 of member 2. In other words, after the spring is compressed, the bail may be slipped over handle 10, and the spring will be efi'ectually held in this position so as to allow the key to be readily removed.
The lugs 12 on the forked end 11 have curved upper faces so that they readily position themselves regardless of the angle of member 1. I
By adjusting the nut 8, the fulcrum point bers to compress the spring and release pressure on the key. The device may be quickly placed in position on anyordinary valve mechanism, and may be easily operated by any one of average intelligence to quickly remove and replace the key.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my in vention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope ofthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A valve springcompressor comprising two members, a rod spacing the members apart pivotally connected to one member,
. and adjustably connected to the other member, and said members. constructed to engage a fixed part and'the spring collar plate respectively of an engine valve structure, substantially as described.
2. A valve spring compressor'comprising two members, a threaded rod spacing the members apart pivotally connected to one member between the ends of the latter, a thumb nut adjustably connecting the rod with the other member, and one end of each member forked, substantially as described.
3. A valve spring compressor comprising two members, an adjustable fulcruming device connecting the members between theirends, said device spacing the members apart and comprising a rod pivotally connected at one end to one member and adjustably connected at its other end to the other member, both members, having one forked end, the forked end of one member wider than the other, and-inwardly projecting lugs on the larger forked member, substantially as described.
4:. A valve spring compressor comprising two members, an adjustable fulcruming. de-
vice connecting the members between their ends, said device spacing the members apart and comprising a rod pivotally connected at one end to one member and adjustably connected at its other end to the other member, both members having one forked end, the forked end of one member wider than the other, inwardly projecting lugs on the larger forked member, a bail pivoted to one member and. adapted to engage over the other member, substantially as described.
-5. A valve spring compressor comprising two members, a threaded rod pivotally connected to one member, the other member having openings through which the rod is positioned, and also having a slot intersecting the openings, a thumb nut in said slot engaging the threads of the rod, whereby the members may be adjusted toward and away from each other, and said members constructed to engagea fixed part and a col-. lar plate respectively, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I- have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILIP F. PILLINER.
