Be it known that we, MAX BLOGG and SIEGFRIED BLooe', subjects of the German Emperor, and residents of Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Paper Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for opening the paper bags used in stores.
In accordance with the present invention the bags are laid around a roller or curved surface and are held at one or at both ends by spring pressure in such manner that the side of the bag provided with the curved cut away part separates from the uppermost bag and can be easily gripped for the purpose of opening and removing the bag.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in several embodiments. igure 1 is an end elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section and Fig. 3 a rear view of a bag holder provided with four rollers of different diameters. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section and Fig. 5 is a rear view of a bag holder provided with a single roller while Figs. 6 and 7 show another form of the arrangement for securing the ends of the bag.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 a number of drums b are arranged adjacent one another in a holder a made of sheet metal, wood, or other suitable material. The drums b are made of different diameter for bags of diiferent sizes. The drum shafts 0 are preferably made square at their ends and rest in correspondingly shaped openings d in the ends and in the partition walls e. From the openings (Z slots f extend to the edges of the walls 6 so that the drums may be removed from or inserted in the slots in the holder a. On each of the drums b is secured by means of lugs g a blade spring h the ends of which may be adjusted by screws 2'. In order to permit insertion of the bags in the holder a the drums (Z are preferably removed from the holder and the closed ends of the bags clamped under one end of the blade spring h. The bags are now laid around the drum 9 and the projecting edges of the open ends of the bags clamped under the other end of the blade spring 7L whereby the upper bag automatically opens. If a bag is be removed the operator inserts his finger in the open end of the bag and grips the projecting somewhat shorter side of the bag. The other side of the bag is held by the one end of the blade spring 7t until the bag is fully opened in pulling it away. The tension of the ends of the springs 71 can be adjusted by means of the screw according to the thickness of the bags clamped thereby and can again be adjusted after the removal of a number of the bags. In order to prevent admission of dust the bags are automatically opened to such an extent only that the upper side can be gripped by the fingers. Instead of the arrangement of adjacent drums described, there can be inserted in the holder at as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a single drum about which the bags can be laid adjacent one another, the open ends of the same being pressed by the blade springs h as above described against the surface of the drum and the closed ends of the bags being held together by clamps m. Each clamp is connected with the drum cover with its ends which are bent at right angles.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 and 7 in which, as in Figs. 1 to 3, a number of adjacent drums b of the same diameter are provided and the closed ends of the bags are held together by clamps and are pressed against the surface of the drum cover as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The drums d are, however, in this case hollow and are provided on the sides with openings 0. Through the latter extend portions m of the clamps while the part of the clamp engaging the bags consists of two pieces m m This separation is necessary in order to permit the clamps to be passed around the wall of the drum.
