BUCKET.

Specification of Letters Patent.

The principal object of our invention is to. provide a bucket for prospecto-rs use, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that a substantial article is produced at a low cost and one that is not easily deranged, thereby providing for continued and etlicient use in places where very eX- tensive repairs are not possible.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings the preferred form of the device is set forth.

The bucket proper is made up of a vessel l having aplurality of openings 2 therein and at different points thereof, the openings being preferably circular and being spaced a suitable distance apart, the arrangement being very much in the nature of a sieve. Adjacent the top of the vessel are a series of similar equidistant openings 3 through which suitable fastening devices, such as chains or cords d, may be passed.

As a means of supporting the bucket in position for use we employ a holder 5 havmg its central intermediate portion removedA whereby a closed circular formation is provided, there being a number of openingsl (i spaced around 'the holder and preferably at the saine distance apart as are' the openings at the top of the vessel l, these openings in the holder being'adaptcd to receive the beforementioned chains or fastening devices si. brought to a rather sharpened edge so that when the bucket is run through the sand or gravel it will be sufficiently broken up and disintegrated and may be easily collected by the bucket. The opposite end of the holder 5 is provided with a suitable shank 8, preti erably hollow, into which a handle 9 or' any desired length is inserted whereby the bucket may be manipulated; the handle may be secured in the shank in .any desirable way but preferably by means of a transversely extending pin l() engaging each of the parts. Extending longitudinally of the holder 5 and preferably along a central line thereof and suitably spaced above the main portion of the holder is a bar l1 having an intermediate portion l2 of reduced diameter about which a ring or equivalent device 13 passes, the ring being in engagement withonc end of the rope, cable or chain 14.

Our device intended primarily for use in gold dredging and particularly with the dredger described and claimed in our copending application Serial No. 677,697.

The bucket is designed to be run along the gravel beds or sandy bottoms of streams with the pointed or sharpened end 7 fore.- niost, the actual movement of the bucket being4 provided through suitable means on which-the cable-or chain or rope 14 is wound, the guiding of the bucket being attended to by an operator through the medium of the handle 9. l

Of course the material of which the bucket is made is not of prime importance nor is the capacity thereof, such features being matters of design and depending upon the final cost of the outfit .and the locality 'in which it is to be used.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-:

A device of the class described comprising a perfo ated vessel, a'holder supporting the vessel, a handle on the holder whereby it may be guided, together with a longitudinally extending bar adapted for engage ment with a power-actuated element where-y by the device may be drawn through the soil.
