To all whom it may concern:
Re it known that l, JOHN M. Nass, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia., in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Encation.
My invention relates to improvements 1n o 'envelops, and more particularly to envelope having improved means for locking'them in closed position, preventing any possibility of access to the contents of the envelop Y without detection.
A- A further object is to provide an improved safety fastener for envelops which comprises two members, one connected with the body `of the envelop, and the other with the closf .ing flap and adapted to interlock whena blow is had upon the members when together, so as to permanently seal the envelop and prevent any possibility of the same being fraudulently opened without detection. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel. features of construction and combinations and arj rangements of parts, as will be more fully the claim. i ln the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a plan View of my improved envelop showing the saine in open position. composed of sheet metal, and is provided lwith two angularly positioned tongues which project from a point adjacent the 'center of the member 8, and dare apart having their free ends bent forming rounded enlargements 11.
The member Sis positioned against the inner face of the covering flap 5, and the tongues 10 project through an opening 12 in the tab 7, said tab 7 being preferably mucllaged so as to adhere to the member 8 and the covering flap 5 to securely hold the member 8 in position, rl`he member 9 is also` composed of sheet metal, and is provided' at its ends with two inwardly projecting jaws 13, which are bent in a general compound curve as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 5. Between these jaws 13, an inclined de'lecting enlargement 14 lis provided, andl these jaws 13 lprojectthrough an open ing 15 in end tlap 2, whilethe member is securely held against this eri'de flap by the tab 6 which is mucilaged as shown. The jaws 13 also project through openings 16 and 17 in end flap 3, and back Hap 4 respectively, and the back flap 4.- is mucilaged as shown at 18 to seal the body of the envelop as isordinarily done. The Hap 5 is also mucilagedy as shown at 19 to seal the flap in the ordinary way.
When the inclosures of the envelop are in place, it is simply necessary to fold the flap 5 downwardly after its mucilaged portion 19 is moisteiied. The tongues 11 of member 8 will position themselves between the jaws 13 of member 9, the respective tongues being at opposite sides of the enlargement 14.
When av sharp blow is had upon the flap, the tongues 12 will move outwardly under the jaws 1B, and the jaws 13 and the tongues will be mashed dat as shown inFig. 3. The fastener will therefore securely hold the flap in its closed position, so that it can be re' moved without detection. Furthermore, as the fastener locks all of the aps together, none of them can be removed without detection. Hence, while my improved fastener serves to lock the closing flap, it also acts to permanently secure all of the flaps of the envelop together, and when the members are locked together as shown in Fig.'3, the inclosures may be safely transported without the danger of fraudulent manipulation of the envelop.
