Description
stent N @wir JEROME" M; anni@` or HAMILTON, NEW Yoan.
Letters Patent No. 104,448, dated .Tu-ne 21, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN `wrzacrm."R-srizns roR noone'.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent land making part of the same.V
To all whom t'may cncem: l l lBe it known thatI, JEROME Mi GRAY, of Hamilton, in the vcounty -of Madison and State of New ""Yorlnhave invented anew andfuseful Improvement 1 in Door-Strip; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a` full, clear, and exact description thereof, `which will enable others skilled in the art-to make l ,and use the same, reference `being had to the accomj panying drawing formingpart of this specification.
. The object of this invention f is toprovide simple,` i fdurable, and eicientmeansfor preventingwind and water from entering dwellings and other buildings, beneath and around outside doors;` and f l #11 It consists in the use of one lor more thicknesses of-` felt or cloth, or other" pliable or elastic material, atutached to" the bottom strip atjthe lower portion of the l door,`supported and held `in"place bymeans of an adjustable spring rod, as hereinafter rnorefully described. v i v In ,thel accompanying drawing-` j Figure 1 represents a verticalsection of an outside door provided 4with my door-strip. l l Figure2 isa vertical section of fig. 1. on the line }"`.Sn1ilar Vletters of l reference indicate corresponding parts. v l :l p A represents the door. *B is the threshold. l C is the casing.
"other equivalent material, (one or' more in number,) tacked to the doorpiece, and may be laid solas to overlap eachother, if more thanone thickness is used,
as seen in thedrawing. l j Y 'lhe felt or cloth, or other material, is partly curved by the rebated. piece of wood or nietalE, which is fastened to the door by screws'F E. l
G represents a rod, which"s supported by the adj Pjustable springs H H. l 1 These springs are confined to the piece E by the plate I, and maybe raised "or loweredfor the adj ust- D represents strips or pieces of felt or cloth, orl
ment of the rod to the felt or cloth. Two or more of .rod and ,theiform of the springs is seen in iig. 2.
By adjusting the rod to the felt, the wear of kthe felt and theineqnalities in `'che threshold, caused by wear, are provided for,l while thev elasticity of the springs allows the door to beopened and closed with -out catching or other obstruction.
By this arrangement, the felt, cloth, and other material is kept in close contact'wth the threshold when the door is closed, thus eectually excluding wind and water.
In the casing thereof', on one or both sides, or over the top of the door, I insert an elastic rod or fillet, J, as seenin g. 2. This llet isplaced in a groove in the casing, and made elastic by means of spiral springs,` th'e tendency of' which springs is to force the fillet out, so that'it will adjust itself to the inside of the door, and form a tight joint therewith, for the exclusion -of air and water.
The advantages 0f this whole'arrangement for ren' dering n outside door tight, over the common weatherystrip devices now in use, are many, and must bel'obvious to all.`
Having thus described my invention I claim as newanddesire to Patent- Y 1. In combination with a door, the felt or cloth, or
other material D, adjustable rod Gr, and springs H,
arranged substantially as and Vfor the purposes herein shown and described.
v2. yThe rebated piece E, in Vcombination with the feltjD, rod G, and springs H, substantially as and for the purposes described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 16th day of February, 1870. f JEROME M'. GRAY.
Witnesses Gao. W. MABEE, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
