Description

l To 'whomimag-concern:
,JOHNjfnrcKAeoiv,4 or" vEvAY, INDIANA.`
" Letters Patent No.104,`435,.dctted June 2 1, 1870.
` IMPRovEMnNT IN FARM-GATE.
- f-"Ihe Schedule` referred to in these Letters Patent and making pa of the same.
Beit known that LJoHN Droimsov, of Vevay,
f inthe county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Farm- `(lates, of which the following is a .full and clear dcscriptiou, reference being had to the accompanying 1 drawings making part ot' this specification. p
Ilhe nature ofmy improvement in 4gates consists in jhe construction 'of the gateto adapt it for use where j the ground is uneven, that it may, when opened to any extent, swing high above the ground, and close by its ownweight; and tothe arrangement of the` adjust- `able part-s thereof to permit ofjthe elevation of the free end of the gate, when, by reason ot' the inclination of the hinge-post, the gate sags, and also the latchbar secured to the latch-post. A i `Figure 1 represents an .elevation of my improved Jgate having theproper elevation above the ground.
Figure'Zrepresents the manner of elevatingthc latch end of the gate, when, the hinge-post having inclined, the free end of the gate bore upon theground.
A is thegate, hinged tothe side of the hinge-.post
B by hinges a a', the former hinge being secured to 'the tQp'raMil'D offthe gate and tothe post B nearer to the inner `edge of the said post B than is the lower `hinge a.
i i, ,When the posts B and C are ver-tical, the free end `of the gate is rectangular.'
` j The top` rail D of the gate `is shorter than the bot.-`
Ithas a series of pins E secured to the tom rail D'. bottom edge thereof at one-third the distance from the free end ofthe gate.
` The Vend stiles F and G, and also the intermediate i `stiles H, 'immediately in front of the series of pins or j ratchet-bar E, are attached to the rails of thel gate by 1 In order to permit the vfront `end of theV rails to be raised, the holes through which the bolts pass that fasten theailsto the .stiles, should be slightly clon'- gated, or madea little ,larger thanthe bolts, as other- 'j "wise the diierentlength of 4rails would describe circles of varying or different diameters, and therefore would so bind as to prevent anymaterial adjustment of the. gate. As, however, it is only'necessary to raise the front `end a short distance, provision may be made forthis byk simply boring the holesa little larger than the bolt-s. j
A diagonal bracc, formed of two strips I, which emtoothed series The bolt or pin K is employed to secure together the diagonal brace and rail, Df, of the gate. The rail D" is provided with a nu mber ofperforatious, 1', through a stles F and H; itsfree end rests upon the gate railv "D", the opposite end being pivoted to the lever M'. Said lever has` its lower end pivoted to the rail of the" gate beneaththe rail D. The handle of the lever pr0` jects above'ithe upper rail of the gate.
To the upper rail of the gate are secured the checkblocks N N', which limit the throw of the latch L of the gate.
Thelatch-bar O is secured to pins or studs projecting from`- the latch-post. It is a thin strip of wood, o r other suitable material, having its upper end incliuing toward the gate. v n
rlhe adjustment of a gate4 constructed in the manner ofthe one herein described, when the hinge-post is caused to lean toward the latch-post by reason of the we'ght ofthe gate, is readily accomplished; thel bolt or pin K having been removed, the Aoperator` ele Yates to the desired height the free or latch end of the gate, andintroduces the bolt e of the diagonal brace between the pins or teeth. of the ratchet-bar E nearer the hinged end of thegate, as exhibited in tig.'2; the `pin K is then Areplaced, which prevents the elevation .13, instead of to the outsideaiid the relative positions of the gate and post() remain the same. y What I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is-
1. A gate, A, having its bottom longer than its top, 4and having the'brace-bars I, ratchet-bar E, and clamping bolt or pin K, constructed and arranged, in connection with said gate, as herein described.
2. 'rile laan-bar o, in combination wat agiata;-
post c, when constructed and arranged, with reference to the position of the gate-latch L, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
JOHN DICKASON.
