METAL-EDGE-BOX MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JoI-IN SAUR, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montrose, Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Metal-Edge-Box Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to metal edge box machines, and particularly to improved means adapted for cutting off the metal strip and tucking the end of the same without leaving the usual bur on the metal.
The object of my invention is to replace the present form of fixed cutting means by means for accomplishing the same work which shall be movable; such improved means having a cutting portion and a portion designed to tuck in the cut end of the strip.
These and other features of my invention are more fully set forth hereinafter, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a view of the recessed end of the die; Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the cutting element in place; Fig. 3, is a view of the die in its operative position with re spect to the coacting anvil; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line a-a, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, is a detached view of the cutting element; Fig. 6, is an edge view; Fig. 7, is a sectional view of said cutting element; Fig. 8, is a detached view of the cutter slide; Fig. 9, is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 10, is a sectional view thereof.
The improved cutting element forming the subject of my invention is free to rock on a pin in the upper portion of the recessed end of the die; said pin being fixed to the die, and it has at its lower end a knife-edge for cutting, and a V-shaped notch for tucking the metal strip. It is also provided with a cam-slot, so disposed relative to a pin carried by the cutter slide, that when said latter pin is in the extreme lower end of said cam-slot, the knife edge shall be in position to cut off the metal, and when said pin is in the extreme upper end of the slot, the V-shaped notch shall be in position to tuck the metal strip.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the die, having a recessed end 2, with a supplemental recess 3, in which is mounted a pin 4: upon which a knife 5 may rock; the movement of said knife being limited Specification of Letters Patent.

A cutter slide 6 is disposed in the recess 2; belng shown in Fig. 2, in dotted lines, in position to cut the metal strip, and in the position after the strip has been cut in Fig. 3; the knife being shown in such latter view in position to tuck the metal strip.
In Fig. 4:, the parts indicated in Fig. 3, are shown in cross section on the line aa. The special form of the knife is shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, in which views 10 represents the V-shaped notch employedfor tucking the strip; 11 is the knife-edge used for cuttingofi the strip; 12 is the cam-slot. and'13 is an aperture for the reception of the pinst. Fig. 6 is an edge view, and Fig. 7 is a vertical section of said knife.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10, are views in detail of the cutter slide, in which 14; represents the pin for moving the knife 5; 15 is a notch which fits over the anvil tip 16, and 17 is a slot through which the metal strip is fed into position.
During the time that the strip is being fed into position through the slot 17 of the cutter-slide 6 and up to the time that it is ready to be cut off, the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 2. When the cut off begins, the notch 15 strikes on the anvil tip as the die descends, thus causing the cutter slide to stop, while the die continues its downward motion. This act-ion causes the knife 5 to move as guided by the cam-slot 12 and pin 14, which movement is such that when the die has completed its stroke, the notch in the knife is coincident with that of the cutter slide and die, as shown in Fig. 3.
Since the notched portion of the knife protrudes slightly below the notches of the cutter slide and die, it is evident that the strip will be neatly tucked in at this end of the box. It will also be seen upon reference to Fig. 1, that the knife in its oscillatory motion across the face of the cutterslide 6 has a tendency to sharpen itself, which tendency is increased by the tapering of the surface of the knife, as shown at 18 in Figs. 6 and 7, and the mechanical pressure applied to the outer surface of the cutter-slide, as indicated by the arrow, at, Fig. 4.
I claim:
1. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die, a cutter slide movable with respect to said die, and an oscillating knife carried by said die, said knife being oscillated when the die is moved with respect to said cutter slide.
2. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die, a cutter slide movable with respect to said die, and an oscillating knife pivoted to said die, said knife being oscillated when the die is moved with respect to said cutter slide.
3. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die having a recessed end, a cutter slide movable in said recess, an oscillating knife mounted in said recess between the die and the cutter slide, and means for oscillating said knife.
4. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die having a recessed end, a cutter slide movable in said recess, a combined cutting and tucking member mounted in said recess between the die and the'cutter slide, and means for oscillating said cutting and tucking member.
5. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die, a cutter slide having movement independently of and with said die, a cutting element having a notch and a cutting edge pivoted to said die, and a pin carried by said cutter slide, said cutting element having a cam slot receiving said pin whereby upon movement of said cutter slide or die vertically with respect to each other,
oscillation of said cutting element will be effected.
6. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die, a cutter slide having movement independently of and with said die, a cutting element having a notch and a cutting edge pivoted to said die, the latter having a recessed end receiving said cutter slide and cutting element, and a pin carried by said cutter slide, said cutting element having a cam slot receiving said pin whereby upon movement of said cutter slide or die vertically with respect to each other, oscillation of said cutting element will be cffected.
7 In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die having a recessed end, a cutter slide slidably mounted in said end and movable independently of and with said die, a knife carried by said die, and a pin carried by said cutter slide, said knife having a cam slot receiving said pin whereby upon movement of said cutter slide vertically with respect to said die, said knife willbe oscillated in the recess of the die.
8. In a metal edge box machine, the combination of a die having a recessed end, a cutter slide slidably mounted in said end and movable independently of and with said die, a cutting element having a notch and a cutting edge pivoted to said die, and a pin carried by said cutter slide, said cutting element having a cam slot receiving said pin whereby upon movement of said cutter slide vertically with respect to said die, said knife will be oscillated in the recess of the die.
