NamHANiEL E. BUFFLNGTONQN NORTH PROVIDENCE, AssIeNoR To HLMSELF, JotfIN NIeEnANDLYsANDER FLAGG, or SMITHVILLE, RHODE -IsLANn Letters Patent No. 104,419, dated June 21, 1870.
HM muRovED eternas-LINE Homann AND sTRETcHER.
` '.lfhe Schedule referred't in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Be it known that I, NATHANIEL E. BUFINGTN,
of North Providence, inthe Jcounty of Providence4 and State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and improved Clothesline` Holder and Stretcher; and I, `do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact descriptionthereo which will enable others skilled `in the artto `Vmalte and use the same,
` reference .being had to the #accompanying `drawing forming part -of this specification.
` l Figure 1represents a side view, partly in section,
"of my improved clothes-line holder.
Figure 2 is a front view of the stretcher.` j Figure 3 is a side view of the friction-holder.
l Similar 4letters of reference indicate corresponding partsf"r i The invention consistsl in the use of a windlass provided with a ratchet and pawl, in combination with a pin, upon which "a frictionfroller is placed, over whihthe line is laid, where it igbenpto change the i. direction. i j i v l 1 The friction-roller allowsthe line to be stretched by `the weight or windlass withoutinjnryto the llille.
`The vertical adjustment of fthe roller allows the line, when weighted, tolplay in a vertical direction withoutv i heilig ohat'ed or worn. l
`A, in the drawing, represents thel horizontal' shaft c, locked by a pawhfl, to prevent the line from un-Y winding.
e is a hook, projecting vfrom the shaft A. The end l ofthe line is secured to this hook. By then revolving the shaft-,lille line can be wound up, and stretched ad lb'itum. v
C is a frictionfrollcr,tted upon a -vertical pin, f, that projects from the horizontal arm of an L-shaped plate or bracket, D;
"lhe vertical arm of this plateis', by screws or otherwise, secured to a post or wall'wherever the line is to be bent. The roller C is vertically adjustable on the pin f, for thejpurpose hereinbefore specified.
Having thus described my invention, y I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The crank-shaft A, provided with ratchet c, and journaled in Aears a a, in combination with the pawl d, line g, bracket D, and piu f, with the frictionpurpose specified.
