SHEETMETAL DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented NOV. 12, 1912.
Application filed July 24, 1911. Serial'No. 640,061.
oi' door which' maybe manufactured at relatively low cost, shallv present the maximum degree of rigidity commensurate with the thickness of metal used an"d present the desired ornamental appearance.
Referring vto the drawings- Figure 1 i" a face view of a 'door constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is -a rear viewthereof., FigQSis a faceview of one of thetwo similar sheet-metal reinforcing strips which may be used. at the ends" of the door; Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged sectional views of the door 4of the preceding figures, the sections being taken at the lines'4and 5, respectively, on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the respectiye'arrows; and Fig. 6, a View of a blank from which. the door of 'the preceding figures may be formed. l
The blank from which the door `illustrated in Figs. 1,2, 4 and 5 is formed, is illustrated.
in Fig. 6, and as shown, is of general -rectarr gular shape. The end portions of the blank are preferably slotted at opposite sides of the median line thereof, asrepresented aty 7, the portions of the blank lying between these slots, as represented at 8, which form the upper and lowerrails of the door whenl the blank is bent as hereinafter described,
projecting a slight distance beyond the' ad-lr 1 jacent'portionsof the blank as shown in Fig. 6. Thecorners of the blank contain right-angle recesses as representedlat 9, and
are ypreferably cut awayat angles'fto the sides of the blank Aas represented at '10.
shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4- and 5, the blankfis reverselybent at its opposite sides, along parallel lines 11 and 12, to cause the lateral marginalportions 13 of the blank to become offset with relation to the central portion l 14 of the latter as represented most clearly in Fig. The blankis then folded at opposite sides rearwardly and in wardlyfre-` spectively, along parallel lines 15 and 16 to the position illustrated in Fig. 4, in which the free lateral edges 17 of the portionsl 13 of the blank overlap the rear surface of the section 14, as clearly illustrated in the last referred to figure, in which position the edges 17 ofthe blank are rigidly secured to the section 14 as by the electric spot-welding process. are thereupon reversely bent along parallel lines 18 and 19 to cause the main-portions of these sections 8 to be offset forwardly of as illustra-ted ofthe upper section 8 in Fig. 5; and the edges 2O of the sections 8 and the edges 21 of the portions of the blank adjacent thereto'are bent rearwardly along the iines 22 and 23, respectively, to extend preferably at right `angles to 'the section 14 of the blank to form inwardly turned flanges at opposite ends of the door.
The bending of the blank as described causes the lateral walls 24 of t-he slots 7 and to be brought, respectively, vinto alining cent lwalls of the recesses 9 to abut, all as representedein Fig. 2. The abutting edges of ythe4 parts just referred t-o may then be brazed -or welded. It is, however,l preferred that separate pieces of metal be incorpo- The end sections'S of the blank l [the section 14 at opposite ends of the door,
.the adjacent ends of the flanges 201 and 21 '.edgewiseabutting relation, and the adjarated with the integral door-structure described, at the opposite ends of the latter,
as repres'ented at 25, the sections 25, which are preferably shaped as illustrated and are providedv with rearwardly turned flanges 26 K upper and'lower ends and secured thereto, as by welding or brazing them to the flange sections 2() and 21 and thoseportions of the door which lie at Aopposite-'sides of the slots'7. Y
The' bending of the blankas described causes the-ccntral'portion 14 thereof to be .come olfsetrea'rwardly with relation to the surrounding portionsof thedoor, thus producing a panel' eife'ct on the front side of the` door as representedin Figs. l, 4 and 5, the
-portions .'13 of the door forming tubular sec` tions, or stiles, .flanking-the panel 1 4 and 'being rigid therewith,'-which produces a door highly vresistant to torsional strains formed of a'double thickness of metal, t. ting against the rear side of the door at its tendingftofiflex it and presenting'v at its exposed` side, as jan"additionall feature, a panel eiiect, free from 'unsightly-overlaps. l i .Whatl elairnvas new and desire to secure lfA paneledsheet-Inetal door formed of "vra single.; metal sheet with opposite edge-` v portions thereof forming' vfour-sided offset tubular.- 'stiles, land its .upper and lower edge-1. portions forming 'upper and lowerpifset ra'il's5gsaid.
