Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SMITH, a subject of Great Britain, that I have taken out my first naturalization papers, residing at Montrose, in the county of Montrose, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Escapes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fly escapes.

The object of the invention resides in the provision of a fly escape adapted to be associated with windows and capable of being operated from inactive to active positions Zivithout the necessity of opening the win- With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details 01. construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window sash having the improved fly escape associated therewith. Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the fly escape in closed position, and Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 with the fly escape in open position.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates generally a window sash which includes side members 10 and 11, a top 12 and a bottom 13. Mounted in the sash A is a glass pane 1 1, the upper edge of which terminates short of the top 12 of the sash and this exposed edge of the pane is protected by a suitable cap 15. The top 12 of the sash A is provided on its lower side with a transverse recess 16 disposed in the same plane as the pane 1 1 and having its outer portion onlarged as at 17. The lower side of the top 12 is provided at its inner end with a depending lip 18 which carries a glass pane 19 disposed in spaced relation to the pane 14 and which has its lower exposed edge protected by a suitable cap 20.

Movably mounted in the recess 16 is a shutter 21 the lower end of which terminates in an arcuate portion 22 adapted to seat upon the cap 15 when the shutter is dis posed in lowered or closed position. The shutter 21 is manipulated through the medium of rods 23 depending from each side of said shutter respectively and guided in eye members 2 1 secured to the lower end o1 the side members 10 and 11 respectively of the sash A. Each of the rods 23 is pro-- vided with notches 25 and 26 adapted to engage the eye members respectively so as to lock the shutter 21 in open or closed position as the case may be. The notches 25 and 26 are adapted to be held in respective engagement with the eye members 2A by a spring 27 anchored to each eye member and bearing against respective rods 23.

In order to set the escape in open position when same is closed as shown in Fig. 2 it is only necessary to press the rods 23 against the influence of the spring 27 which will result in the disengagement of the notch 25 from adjacent eye members 2 1 when an upward pressure on the rod 23 will move the shutter 21 into the recess 16 as shown in Fig. 3. When the shutter is in this position the rods 23 are released to the influence of the spring 27 when respective notches 26 will engage with respective eye members and lock the shutter in open position. After the setting of the shutter 21 in open position the escape of the flies through the space between the cap 15 and the lower edge of the shutter is facilitated by darkening the room.

What is claimed, is

The combination with a window sash having the lower side of its top provided. with a transverse groove, of a pane mounted in said sash having its upper edge terminating short of the top of the sash and disposed in the same plane as said recess, a shutter slidably mounted in the recess of the sash for controlling the opening between the upper edge of the pane and the sash, a rod slidably mounted on the sash and having one end secured to said shutter and means iEor locking said rod against sliding movement when said shutter is disposed in open position.
