H designates thetop of the box-cover. It does not form a part of thetable-top, but is arranged to swing down behind out of theway when the machine is in operation. It is hinged to the back C.

K represent-s the front of the boxe-over, to which the lock is fastened. It is hinged to the top H in such a manner that when thrown back it may be folded up against the top H, thus bringing the pendent portion into vely small compass.

Grooves are made in the front K to receive the edges of the ends F F, and it will beapparent that when our box-cover is set up over the machine there will be no fissures or channels around the base thereof to admit dust or other extraneous matter.

`We are .well aware that folding tops have been used for sewing-machines; hence we do not desire to claim such broadly; but

,What we'claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y A 'lhefolding top for se\\ing=1nacl1ines herein doscribed, having hinged leaf B, with supporting rib a?, carrying the folding box-cover, tov which the back C is rigidly attached by braces E, and the ends F hinged to the'back by the plate-hinges z, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purposes shown and described.
