It all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PETBIE, a

subject of the King of England, and a resi dent of St; Johns, Newfoundland, have invented a new and Improved Davit-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a ship-davit hook for use in lowering and hoisting lifeand other boats.

An object of my invention is to provide a davit hook particularly adapted for use at the end of a boat-raising tackle, constructed to automatically disengage itself from the boat ring as the boat strikes the water.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a hook to which the boat eye may readily be attached and detached.

A further object is to obtain a simplified form of hook containing relatively few parts which might get out of order.

With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings-forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention when in normal use with the boat in position on ahook; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing a preferred form of my boat-gripping hook; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2

' but showing an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fi 2 but showing the same disengaged from t e boat.

In the embodiment shown in the drawings, there is suitably suspended from an extension 16 carried by a davit 10, a lower pulley block 28, a hollow casing 29, in which casing is adapted to move a piston rod 30 having a head 31, disposed between which head 31 and the end 32of the casing and surrounding the rod 30, is a compression spring 33. Fulcrumed to the lower end of the piston rod 30 is a hook 34 and a tripper 35. The tripper is of a general U-shape, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3 and inclosing the hook. Both the tripper 35 and the hook 34 have an upward extension 36,

the extensions projecting in opposite directions from the rod 30 and the upper ends of WhlCll extensions bear on the under side of the casing 29. It will be seen that the tendency of the spring 33 would be to draw the rod 30 upward into the casing, as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, thereby tending to separate the hook 34 and tripper 35 from each other.

The weight of the small boat on the hook, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, will be suificlent to overcome the action of the spring 33, and to hold' the tripper in inoperative posltion, but as. soon as the small boat strikes the water and the weight of the boat is released from the hook 34, the spring 33 will reestablish itself, and the end of the tripper 35 will press against the eye 37 on the boat, thereby in effect throwing theeye 37 oil the hook 34.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a supporting hook, a hollow casing, a rod disposed in said casing and projecting therefrom, a head on said rod within the caslng, a compression spring disposed about said rod and between said head and easing, a hook, and a tripper both pivoted to the end of said rod opposite said head and outside of said casing, said hook and tripper having extensions bearing upon said casing whereby the weight disposed upon saidhook will compress said spring, to permit said tripper to be disposed to the rear of the object on the hook, so that as the weight of tripper will act on said object to remove the same from the hook.

2.
