Be it known that I, VViLLIAM FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Spring, in the county of Howard State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Bump-Rods and ell-Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps for pump rods and well tubes, and is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with the similar device covered by my patent application Serial No. 586,4t97 having the same filing date as the present application, and executed by me the 3rd day of October, A. D. 1910. its object is to provide a clamping device that may be readily adapted to grip a pump rod or well tube of any ordinary size and that will re' tain a firm grip thereupon until released.
Another object is to provide means for quickly releasing said clamping device when desired.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a clamping device for the purposes mentioned which will be strong, durable, simple and efficient, and comparatively easy to produce, and also one that will not be likely to get out of working order.
lVith these and various other objects in view, my invention has relation to "certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hereindescribed device showing the same used in connection with a tripod, the lower portions of which are broken away. Fig. 2 is another side elevation taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 1, a small portion of the tripod being again broken away.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in both the figures, the numeral 1 denotes the pump rod and 2 the well into which said rod extends. A tripod 3 is used in conjunction with the clamping mechanism, of which a description follows. The principal member of this clamping device is an elongated plate 1 having semi-circular extremities provided with transverse teeth 5. Said plate is also provided with a groove 6 extending around its edge and serving to provide a larger surface for contact with the pump rod. -At
each extremity of the plate 41 there is pro- 'videdfatransverse aperture 7 eccentric with the aforesaid semicircular extremities. Elther of these apertures 1s adapted to receive" a rivet or similar connection upon which are pivotally mounted two bolts 8, one at each side of said plate. When the clamping device is in its working position as illus trated, the bolts 8 are intended to extend one on each side of the pump rod 1 and a yoke 9 is mounted upon said bolts and is restricted from outward displacement thereupon by a pair of nuts 10. The plate 4; is pivotally mounted at its center upon the upwardly inclined extremities of a base 11, which base is provided at opposite sides with arms 12 extending into the well casing and contiguous therewith. An arm 13 is pivotally mounted upon the plate 4 at its center, said arm being provided with a pin 14- adjacent to the plate and adapted to contact therewith when said arm is swung at an angle with the edge of the plate. The extremity of the arm 13 has pivotal connection with the extremity of a sliding rod 15, mounted in a guide 16 secured to one of the legs of the tripod.
Owing to the eccentric mounting of the bolts 8, the weight of the pump rod 1 acting downward tends to produce a rotation of the plate 1 such as to increase the distance between the pivotal point of the bolts and the pump rod. The teeth 5 are thus caused to sink into the pump rod preventing any possibility of slipping. When it is desired to release the clamping device, the sliding rod 15 will be pulled outward, causing the arm 18 to be thrown at an angle with the plate 1. This will cause the pin let to exert a downward pressure on the outer portion of the plate 4 causing said plate to rotate slightly toward a vertical position and releasing the pump rod.
The object of providing teeth at each extremity of the plate 4: is to permit the use of the extremities of said plate alternately so that if one extremity becomes worn, or broken; the other may be used in its place.
What I claim is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with 'a U-shaped base member in the form of a bracket, said member having its central portion adapted to receive a pump rod and to rest upon the top of a well casing, of two downwardly projecting arms rigidly secured to said central portion, an
elongated dog or plate provided With semicircular grooved end surfaces, said dog being centrally and rotat-ably mounted on a pin passing through the upturned ends of said base member, said semi-circular surfaces being serrated transversely of the grooves, threaded arms pivoted at each side of said dog at a point eccentric With one of said semi-circular end surfaces, a yoke adjust-ably mounted upon the threaded portion of said arms, an arm pivotally mounted on the pin passing through the central part of said dog, a pin mounted on said arm and adapted to contact with the dog, and means for manually operating said arm.
