Be it known that we, SARA L. W. Con and HENRIETTA T. WERDEN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates toimprovements in vending machines, and more particularly to that type intended for vending postage stamps,the object of the invention being to provide in a small compact structure, a mechanism with which the supply of stamps can be readily inserted therein and accurately dispensed with the use of a proper coin, one at a time, without necessity for the manipulation of any devices other than those which are actuated and controlled by the coin.
A further object is to provide simple and efficientmeans for guiding the stamp strip through the machine and indicating when the stamps shall have become exhausted.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a machine embodying our improvements, with the door of the casing open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. .Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 2 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a separate view of the feed-drum operating devices, and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views.
1 represents a suitable casing provided in its top 2 with a hopper 3 for the reception of coins and in its front wall with a discharge opening i for the exit of stamps.
A shaft 5 is mounted within the casing in rear of the discharge outlet 4 and on this shaft a hub 6 is mounted and carries a feeddrum 7 provided on its periphery with teeth 8 so disposed as to engage perforations be tween stamps. At one end the drum is open and provided with an annular flange 9 to guide one edge of the stamp strip. The other end of the drum? is closed and provided with elongated slots 10 through which screws 11 pass and these screws serve to secure a disk 12to said drum. By thus connecting the feed-drum with the disk 12, its position can be adjusted to cause the pins 8 to properly engage the perforations between stamps of the strip.
The stamp strip 13 is reeled on a suitable hub 14 and the latter is mounted on a pin or spindle 15 carried by a housing 16. This housing'is removablymounted on pins 17 within the casing and in order to hold said housing in place and the reel of stamps on the hub or core 14, the spindle 15 is threaded to enter a boss 18 and said spindle is rovided at its free end with a slotted head 19 to engage a disk 20. which latter is thus disposed at one end of the stamp reel. From the reel, the stamp strip passes upwardly over the top of the housing 16 so as to be seen through a window 21 in the top 2 of the casing. The strip then passes downwardly past the vertical wall of said housing and is guided between flanges 22- projecting from said vertical wall. Afterpassing below the vertical wall of the housing 16, the
stamp strip is passed. partially around a roller 23 and from this roller the strip is caused to pass over the feed-drum and finally to be projected, one stamp at a time (by means of mechanism hereinafter described), through the discharge outlet 4-.
The roller 23 is mounted at the lower end of an arm 24, the upper end of which is pivotally supported. With this construction A curved hood 26 is located over the feeddrum for maintaining the stamp strip in proper relation to the latter and this hood is provided in its under face with grooves 27 for the accommodation of the pins 8 on the feed-drum. The forward edge of the hood 26 is disposed in proximity to the discharge outlet 4 and this edge is provided a series of teeth 28. Vertical displacement of the hood 26 is prevented by fingers 29 projecting from a block or plate 30 secured to the front wall of the casing and said hood is maintained in proper position over the feed drum by means of a spring 31 secured at its upper end to the casingand provided near its lower end with a hole 32 for the reception of a pin 33 projecting from the hood near the forward end of the latter. The feeddrum is made with peripheral grooves 34 and to the front wall of the casing justhelow the discharge outlet 4 a block 35 is secured and this hloclr is provided at its upper end with a series of beveled fingers 36 to enter the grooves 3d of the feed drum and cause a stamp to he guided from said drum out through the dischar e opening 4:.
A shaft 37 is mounte in the upper portion of the casing and to this shaft an arm 38 is secured so as to be disposed directly under the coin inlet 3. A depending bar 39' is also secured to the shaft 37 and to this har a pawl a0 is pivotally attached. A spring 41 which constitutes the motor for the mechanism) is attached to one arm of the pawl t0 and the other arm of this pawl is adapted to engage, successively pins 42 projecting from the disk 12. in order to prevent retrograde rotation of the feed-drum a weighted pawl 48 is provided and adapted to cooperate with the pins 42.
The coin inlet 3 communicates with a chute td provided at one point with a discharge opening 4:5 for the escape of improper coins or tokens, and passing transversely through the lower or discharge end of this chute, is one arm of a weighted triplever to. The trip-lever 4:6 is carried by an oscillatory shaft 47 and this shaft carries a trip lug 48 to cohperate with trip-lugs d9 on the disk 12. lit is apparent that when a coin drops on the trip-lever, the latter will he depressed and the shaft A? oscillated so as to actuate the trip devices Ml-49 and re lease the feed-drum When a coin is inserted through the inlet opening 3 and pressed against the arm 38, the shaft 37 will he turned and the depending bar 39 moved rearwardly against the resistance of the spring 41 until the dog or nor-ares pawl d0 engages one of the pins d2 on the dish 12 which carries the drum 7, The coin will then move through the chute t4: and when it actuates the trip-lever 46, as above described, to release the feed-drum through the medium of the trip devices cooperating therewith, the spring at]; will act as a motor, pulling pawl 40 and the bar 39 forwardly and causing a suficient rotary movement of the feed-drum to project one stamp through the discharge opening at.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
1. in a vending machine, the combination with a feed drum provided with peripheral projections to engage a stamp strip, a disk at one end of said drum, devices connecting said drum and disk and permitting rotary adjustment of the same with relation to each other, means for directing a stamp strip over said drum, actuating means for the drum, cooperating with said disk, and trip devices for releasing the actuating means.
2. in a stamp vending machine, the comloination with a feed-drum, a dislr secured thereto and pins projecting from said disk, of a shaft, an arm on said shaft for operating it in one direction, a bar secured to said shaft, a pawl pivoted to said har and having an arm to engage the pins on said dish, a spring fixed at one end and connected at its other end to another arm of said bar, whereby said spring will he placed under tension when the shaft is turned by means of the operating arm, and tripping devices for releasing the feed drum and the spring-actuated devices.
