To all whom it may concern L Be it known that I, \VILLIAM M. HALL- BATTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVellston, in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storm-Vindows for Street-Cars, the Like, fication.

My invention relates to storm windows particularly adapted for use in the storm fronts of street cars and has for its object the provision of a hoodlike attachment mounted in the front window casing and having an inclined portion to catch rain, snow, ice, etc., and an inclined transparent plate under the first-mentioned inclined portion through which the motorman gets his view of the roadway ahead, said transparent plate being mounted in a frame removably secured in the hood frame so that it can be taken out and reversed when it is desired to clear it of ice or snow.

My invention furthermore consists in providing a hood that is capable of adjustment to accommodate it to the height of the motorman so that the inclined transparent plate will be opposite his eyes.

My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a street car storm front showing my improved window in position, Fig. 2, a side view, Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view of the window, Fig. 4 a cross section with the removable frame displaced, Fig. 5,-a similar view with the removable frame in position, Fig. (5, a detail view of the removable frame, and Fig. 7, a detail view of the latch mechanism. Fig. 8 is a detail view'of certain parts of the device.

In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding Locomotive-Cabs, and of which the following is a speci? parts in the several views.

A indicates the storm front of a street car having the central window frame B through which the motorman looks while operating his car. In theusual construction of storm fronts a sliding sash C is mounted in frame B which may be opened in warm Weather, and closed when the weather is rough and stormy. The window affords protection to the motorman but when it rains, or hails, or snows the vision through the window is obstructed and sometimes becomes so bad that it is necessary for the motorman to open the Window to enable him to see, and the useful. ness of the storm front is nullified.

My invention consists in the provision of a device for attachment to the window frame by which the motorman is enabled to see ahead in any kind of'weather without exposing him to its discomforts.

To this end my invention consists of a hood formed of any suitable rigid material preferably sheet metal, and having an open rectangular frame 2, in which is secured a plate of transparent material 2, such as glass, and with triangular shaped plates 3 secured to, or formed integral with, its ends, said end plates?) having outwardly extending flanges 4 on their longer sides, and inwardly extending flanges 5 on their shorter or lower sides. The flanges 4 on the longer sides slidably engage strips 6 secured to the sides of frame B so that the hood may be raised or lowered as desired and a suitable fastener such as shown at 7 is utilized to hold the hood in adjusted position.

The upper side of rectangular frame 2 is curved in cross section as shown and provided with a lining of sheet rubber or other suitable material, as at 8, that engages the storm front above the window frame B in a weather tight manner. The lower bar of rectangular frame 2 is'formed with an inwardly extending flange 9 that together with flanges 5 on the end plates 3 form rests for a removable frame 10 having a transparent plate 11 mounted therein.

Frame 10 is provided with pins or lugs 12 on its ends, and the inner sides of plates 3 with projections 13 having notches 14 therein to engage the pins or lugs 12, and the inner sides of frame 2 with projections 15 that engage the upper side of frame 10 when in position.
