Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ABNER I-I. BRYANT, OF-CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED EGG-CARRIER.
Specification fomning part of Letters Patent No. 104,261, dated .Inno 14, 1870.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ABNER H. BRYANT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Egg-Carrier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this speciication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is atop view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of one form of strip vbefore the saine is folded. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the transverse strip.
My invention relates to means for transporting eggs; and consists in the manner of folding and weavin g together strips of pasteboard or other suitable material, of peculiar forniation, whereby pyramidal pockets are produced in layers adapted to be placed one above another in a basket, barrel, or other vehicle, and, bythe elasticity of thewalls between thepockets, to prevent damage to the eggs therein contained from external shocks or contact with each other.
Designating on the drawings by the letter A the strips which form two of the walls of each pocket parallel with each other, the letter B will represent the strips which form the other two parallel walls of each pocket. The strips A and B are each rectangular in form, and provided, respectively, with the notches c c and el d, whereby they are interwoven with each-other to form the pockets Z Z.
Previous to putting the strips together they are folded longitudinally along the central line l. This line marks the upper edge of the partition, and the outer edges of the strip are at the bottom thereof. When folded, the notchescl d extend from the upper edge of the partition downward, while the notches c c extend from the lower edges ofthe partition upward, and the connection is formed by placing the strips at right angles to each other, inserting the walls into the notches, and pressing them together until their upper edges are brought on the same level. y
The notch or slot d in the strip B, it will be observed, extends transversely across the line l of the folding, and does not extend more than one-half the distance toward the outer or lower edges of the strip. Its shape is that of two triangles, with the apices connected at the line Z. The object of the sloping sides is to give the transverse strip A sufficient frecdom to allow it to assume the necessary position to form the transverse sloping walls of the pockets.
Sometimes, for the purpose of confining the walls more securely in their sloping positions, the small angular tongues c c are formed at the bases of the notches d. These jut up between the walls of the transverse partition when they are in place, them in position. ble, however.
The notches c c in the edges of the strip A are wider than those in the strip B but their edges have the same slope, and serve to give the proper inclination to the walls which form the partition B. The notches cc do not run. upward to a point, but are provided at their and serve to keep They are not indispensaupper ends with small tongues, similar to those mentioned above in the notches d, and subserving a similar purpose.
'It will be observed that while the walls of the pockets, both above and below the center, give freely to any undue pressure, yet immediately at the central point, where the ends of the notches come together, the walls are stayed in position, and the egg is thereby prevented from slipping down too far. In order to forni the bottoms of the pockets sheets of pasteboard are placed between the layers.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with the strip A, having' the sloping notches c in the edges, the strip B, having the slots d, when folded and arranged to form the rectangular taperingl pockets Z, for transporting eggs, as specified.
2. In combination with the strip A, having the sloping notches c in the edges, and separating-tongues e, the strip B, having the slots d and tongues e, when folded and arranged to form the rectangular tapering pockets Z, for transporting eggs, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABNER II. BRYANT.
