Upon the side opposite the flange 13, each of the side bearings is formed with a flange 15 which flange is fixed at its opposite ends directly to the under faces of the adjacent lower flanges of the diaphragms- 3 by rivets as at 16. .Interr'nediate the webs of the diaphragms each of the flanges 15 is suitably reinforced and apertured as at 17 and adapted to serve as an anchor for the adjacent end of the usual tank bands as 18, which is extended through said aperture and held by a but as at 19.
Itshould be noted that the flange 15 may serve in a similar capacity as an anchor receiving member for anchoring a car body of any design suggested hereinbefore.

Formed integral with each of the side bearings 12 is an upwardly projecting por-" tion as 20 which portion is. fitted between the spaced webs of the adjacent diaphragms 3 and is extended so'that an upper flange formed thereon as at 21 is made to, rest solidly against-the under surface of the top cover plate l at a point beneath the adjacent superposed casting 8, which point is in the line of greatest compression from the superposed structure of the car. The portion 20 is formed of a plate 22 with lateral J' side flanges 23-23, which flanges are disposedto be fixed to the webs of the adjacent diaphragms 3. Each of the flanges 28; also the plate 22, have their upper ends merging into the top flange 21 and their lower ends merging into the body portion of the side bearings and said plate and flanges are disposed so as to follow said line of greatest compression and thus to materially assist the side vertical members or diaphragms of the bolster in withstanding the excessive stresses to which they are subjected as a result of the natural tendency of the car body to tilt to one side or the other, which tend ency is most apparent when the ca is passing around a curve in the track.
The castings 8 are made hollow so as to re duce the-weight thereof and the surrounding walls may be reinforced by any desirable form of webs or braces, but each castingis preferably formed with a heavy rib as 24:

1. In a car bolster, a vertical member, a bottom plate and a perforated side bearing member extending in one casting below said plate and above said plate and adapted to serve as an anchor for a tie rod projected therethrough from above.
2. In a car bolster, a vertical member, a bottom plate and a side bearing member having a perforated extension and extending in a single member above and below said plate and connected with said vertical member and adapted to serve an anchor for a tie rod projected therethrough from above.

In a car bolster, a side bearing member as bottom plate of said bolster and extending into said bolster to serve as a brace and connector, and adapted to serve as an anchor for a tie rod projected therethrough from above. 19 7 A car bolster comprising vertical mein -bers, a horizontal member and a side bear- 111g member connecting said vertical members and extending therebelow.
8. In a car bolster, vertical diaphra s 35% and a side" bearin member formed 0 a single flanged mem ber or" only slightly less depth than the maximum'depth of said bolster and of greater depth than the minimum depth of said bolster, said side bearing mem- 11a ber projecting laterally below said bolsters and being secured to said diaphragins.
9. In a bolster, center sills, diaphragms connected therewith, top-and bottom cover plates and a single east side bearing mem- 5g ber connecting said dia iihragms and extending below and lapping said bottom cover plate.

11. A bolster comprising vertical side 12%: walls, top and bottom cover plates and a side bearing -men1ber, said side bearing member being fixed to said bottom cover plate and having a portion extending between and secured to said side walls.

14. A bolster comprising a vertical memher, a top cover plate, a superposed car body support upon said cover plate and a side bearing member fixed to said vertical mem ber, said side bearing member having a portion resting in contact with said cover plate beneath said car body support.
15. A bolster comprising a top cover plate, a car body supporting member fixed upon the upper surface of said plate and a side bearing member disposed beneath said car body supporting member and in the line of greatest compression from the car body and being formed with a portion contacting wi h the under side of the said plate.
16. A bolster comprising top and bottom cover plates, a car body supporting member fixed upon the upper surface of said top cover plate and a side bearin member disposed beneath the plane of said bottom cover plate and being formed with a portion extending upwardly along the line of greatest compression from the car body, and contacting with the under side of the top cover plate beneath said car body supporting member.
17. A side bearing member for bolsters "formed with a portion adapted to serve as an anchor receiving member body.
18. Aside bearing member 101' body bolsters formed with an upstanding portion. 4 adapted to sustain a part of the weight of the car body and with a portion adapted serve as an anchor receiving member for the car body.
19. A bolster comprising spaced mem bers, a side bearing member fixed to the under sides of said members and being formed with a portion disposed interme diate said members adapted to serve as anchor receiving member for the car body.
20. A bolster comprising a longitudinai member, spaced struts, car body supports disposed upon opposite sides of said struts and being adapted to receive the entire weight of the adjacent end portion of the so car body and side bearing members formed with portions projecting into proximity with said car body supports and bv :1 adapted to partly sustain said car b supports.

In a car bolster having side side bearing attached thereto and provi with a perforated flange adapted to recs the end of a tank band extending thr' said bolster and also provided with an ward extension projecting into the interior of the bolster, said upward projectio 6 ing adapted to reinforce the bolster the side bearing by connection with side walls.
