, d m s misplaced characters vmoval', and, in the Y short-line will automatically ring machine.
The delays and interruptions thus occasioned not only correspondingly diquent delays should the minish the producing capacity of the casting machine,
but afford opportunity for subsecondemned matter not be immediately discovered and removed before proofs are taken, all of which is avoided by the present invention wherein.
and whereby the components of the fullline justification signal are rendered operative to suspend the production of the type designated by succeeding line character signals and until the presentation ofa-normal jus tification signal, thereby placing the suppression of the condemned matter underlthe direct control of the operator at the record strip composing machine and insuring its with W the Suppression Without the part of the casting machine operator, proof reader, or corrector. I In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of invention: Figure 1' is a perspective view of a portion of a type casting and composing machine with the improvement incorporated therein. Fig. 2 is an end 'view and Fig. 3 a partial side elevation of the-devices shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view partly in section of the cross head and at tachments controlling the pump and galley mechanisms. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of portions of a record strip or controller illustrating sectional and full line justification signals.
he same numerals designate like parts in the several figures. The invention is herein shown as applied to the type casting and composing machine of Patent No. 625,998,' date'd May '30, 1899, improvements .of Patent No.
700,330, dated May 20,1902, applied thereto; but inasmuch as the improvements have immediate -relation to the pump and galley tripping devices, only such parts of the complete organization as are necessary to a full sented by levers I, 2,
been illustrated, reference .55 7
understanding of the subject matter have, being bad to-the more detailed deaforesaid patents for 'a of the completely .z'c'ription and illustration organlzed machine.
' In the present instance the members're- 11 'sponding to the designating components of the justification signal are repre formingfin this in stance, part of the. justification adjusting mechanism, each of said levers operatin to elevate'one of the two justification we ges into the path of thep dsitioning davices confurther attention upon embodiment of said 4: is attached to a longitudinally, movable he admeasuring-coinponents G- mg and driven members; Tripping-member 30 rod dandis held normally removed rrsmahe path of the tail of latch coupledwith'said rod. g
The mechanism for transmitting motion from the designating members or levers 1,
2, to the galley. trip and, pump-arrestingldev1ces includes a longitudinally movable sha 1D in line with trip 3 and to the head 11 carried by said shaft is piubted an equalizingbar'for lever 12 eacha'rm whereof stands ,oppos'ite and in position to-be engaged by one of the designating members 1, 2.
Motion is transmitted from shaft 10 to rod 8 through a pendent link 13 engaging said rod' and provided with a pin lt opposite arm 15 of head 11. Owing to. the intermediate, pivoting of lever 12 the motion communicated to shaft10 by the movement of either lever, 1, 2, Will be less indegree than that of the actuating lever, while the motion produced by the engagement of both levers 1, 2, acting in unison will be equal to one half the sum of the movements of the two levers.
The several parts of the transmitting devicesare so constructed, disposed and ar ranged that the movement of shaft 10 derived from either lever-l, 2, acting alone, be insuliicient to throw galley trip 3 while sufficient in extent to cause the engagement of the pump-latch tripping member 4, hencethe sectional line justification signal-with its singledesignating member A or B for each component is inoperative so far as the'galley starting devices are concerned. When, however, the component of the full Iinejustification signal containing the two designating perforations A, B, is-
presented, thereby bringing bot-h designatin'g members the extende movement communicated to shaft 10 will be sufiicient in extent to engage and actuate the galley trip 3 in addi tion to the pump latch tripping member 4 thereby setting in action the galley mechanism for theremoval of the previously com.- posed ,and justified line.
T mechanism thus far described does not differ in any material respect from that ,2, simultaneously into action,
disclosed in Patent No. 700,380, and the new function is imposed'thereon or incorporated therein by the addition of a locking means or latch suitable for retaining the transmitting devices in the intermediate position to which they are advanced by one designating signal, and responsive to the other justification signal (in the casting machine) to release said latch, thereby preventing the formation of typein response to intermediate signals representing matter which it is desired shall be suppressed. To these ends there is mounted upon the arm 15 of head 11 a latch 20 with its active end 21 in position to engage a shoulder 22 on the frame, an with its tail 23 projecting in front of lever 12 opposite designating member or lever 1. Latch 2 0 is provided with an advancing spring 3 L, and is held normally from engagement with shoulder 22 as by the contact of its tail piece 23 with lever 12.
its thus arranged the engagement of latch 20 to lock the pump out of action 1S placed under the direct control of designating lever 52, when acting alone, while its release is placed under the control of designating lever 1, acting alone or in conjunction with lever 2. Thus when lever 2 is operated the advance of head 11- resulting therefrom withdraws the tail of latch 20 from contact with lever 12, permitting said latch to advance 'into position to engage shoulder 22 at or near the beginning of the return motion of head 11, thereby looking out the pum action. When, however, lever 1 is operated the arm of lever 12 engaged thereby and contacting with latch 20 advances more rapidly than does the head 11 supporting said latch, thereby not alone preventing an engaging movementof the latch but effecting a slight retraction of the latter. If both levers 1, 2, latch 20 is maintained in retracted position by-its engagement with lever 12 whose position relatively to head 11 remains unchanged.
It is obvious, therefore, that when head 11 I 20 in the intermediate or to which it has been previously advanced by lever 2 acting alone in response to its designating signal perforation 13, it can be released and the head and connected parts returned to initial position by the subsequentadvance of lever 1 either alone or in connection with lever 2.
The record strip or pattern for use in connection with the improved control mechanism does not differ in any respect from that heretofore in use so far as matter to be composed in the casting machine is concerned, save that it is required that the component of the justification si'gnal immediately succeeding the matter as composed in the rec; ord strip shall contain the designating perforation A. followed by the component conis held by latch lock out position of headll effected thereby advance in unison designating perforation machine in the relever 1 will foltaining when fed to the casting verse order designating low designating lever 2, to insure the release of latch 20 and the return of head 1.1 to the normal operating position before the line signals are presented.
When it is desired to cancel the whole or a portion of a line or justifiable section thereof already composed in the recordstrip said line or section is terminated by a signal containing designating perforation B and composition is continued as before.
As the record strip is fed to. the casting machine perforation B will be presented in advance of the series of signals representing the canceled matter, while the latter will be followed by the justification signal pertaining to the next line or justifiable section, said signal comprising two components of which the first, in the order of presentation, contains, for full line justification, designat ing perforations A and B, andfor sectional. line justification B, while the second component of said justification signal contains designating perforation A. alone.
Upon the presentation of'the perforation B, designating lever 2 will be advanced to effect the engagement of latch 20, thereby looking out the pump mechanism and preventing the formation of type as the signals representing sively presented. When however the rst component of the full line signal or the second component of the sectional line justification signal is presented, thereby bringing into action designating will retractlatch pump mechanism to active upon the presentation of signals, metal 20 and restore the position, so that succeeding character or space will be injected into the mold and the designated type be produced and assembled in line and transferred to the galley as heretofore.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is':-

A control mechanism for type casting machines, including, in combination, the following elements, to wit; two designating members; pump starting means, transmitting devices intermediate said designating members and sai pump arresting and galley starting means adapted to effect action of the pump arresting means through the movement ofa single designating member and to efiect action 0 B, so that the canceled matter are succes- I lever 1, the advance 1 arresting means; galley.
