Be it known that I, HARRY O. BRION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gates, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Pocket-s, of which the following is a speci-l fication.

rIhe invention relates to a pocket closer, and more particularly to the class of safety devices for garment pockets.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which on the application thereof to the garment at the point of location of the pocket will serve to sustain the latter closed thereby obviating the possibility of the accidental loss of articles placed within the pocket, irrespective of the attitude of the wearer whether in standing or stooping position.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to the garment for sustaining of a pocket closed therein without discomfort to the wearer of the garment and that will co-act with different size pockets for the closing thereof, thus, assuring a safety contrivance therefor.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily and easily fastened to the garment and det-ached therefrom when desired and when attached will be prevented from accidental removal from the garment.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment showing the pocket therein, by dotted lines and the safety device constructed in accordance with the invention applied to the said garment. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the garment with the device mounted thereon. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the device with the retaining staple removed therefrom. Fig. et is a perspective view of one of the retaining staples. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device when applied to the garment. F ig. 6 is a perspective View of a slight modification of fastener.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in. the drawing.

Referring to the drawing by numerals 5 designates a portion of a garment which is provided with an ordinary pocket 6, the same hanging as usual between the outer fabric and the lining 7 of the garment and is adapted to be suspended closed by means of a safety device presently described.

The safety device comprises a plurality of bars or rods 8 arranged in substantially parallel relation to each other but spaced apart the desired distance. In this instance three bars are shown, although a lesser or greater number may be employed, which are fixed at their free ends in hollow flattened end caps 9 preferably formed from sheet metal, the ends of the rods or bars 8 being secured therein in any suitable or wellknown manner, and provided in the end edges of the said caps 9 are spaced apertures 10 in which are detachably engaged fastening mediums presently described.

The fastening mediums each comprises a U-shaped staple 11 the limbs of which are formed with pointed ends 12 so as to freely pass through the fabric when said staple is engaged therein and these limbs are adapted to be detachably inserted in the apertures 1U after having been fastened in the fabric or lining 7 of the garment for the mounting of the safety device thereon, the staples being engaged in the lining 7 at opposite sides of the pocket 6, so as to hold the mouth of the pocket taut thereby sustaining said pocket in closed position irrespective of the attitude of the wearer" of the garment and especially when in stooping position or when leaning over thereby avoiding the liability of loss of the contents of the pocket. The staples are bent to form an off-set closed end 18, so as to enable the limbs of the staples to be engaged in the end caps of the safety device without inconvenience and also to avoid the protruding of the garment at the pocket.

In Fig. G of the drawings, there is shown a slight modification of fastener comprising a staple-like member 11i having a rightangularly bent closed end 15, the member being formed from a single strand of wire and is adapted to be inserted in the fabric, so that the said closed end will be exposed at the outer side of the garment, while the free ends of the member 14 will engage in the end head or cap 9 on the frame, in a similar manner as the staple l1 heretofore pointed out.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.

What is claimed is:-

A safety device of they character described, comprising a plurality of resilient bars, end caps securely mounted upon the extremities of the said bars and having apertures therein, a pair of staple-like fasteners adapted for engagement with a garment and for engagement 1n the apertures in the said caps whereby the said device may be detachably secured to such garment for sustaining a pocket therein closed.
