To aZZ whom may concern: I
Be it known that I, Mon'rrmnn Bl. GRIFIETN, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes tor Water- Meters, of which the following as a SPQClfi'? cation.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes for watermeters, such as are placed in the streets and sidewalks of towns and cities; and the object is to provide a box with a cover which will not be .easily or accidentally displaced or removed, andinfact which cannot very well be removed without the proper appliance therefor; and in vention comprises, in addition to Qtfi'zY-C features, means for removing the cover of the meter-box.
VVit-h these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts'which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in. the claims.
In the accompanying drawings2-Figure 1 is top plan view of the be T is a bottom plan view of the cover, 5 is a detail view showing where one of the h in the notch or it an imvardly-pro just below the n eat vtor the clover. with narrow n wider no 3, atopnosil on the sides. re bor: has
bottom, but at the lower end a 13, indicates the cover. This is provided on thelower surface with intersecting longitudinal and transverse ribs 5 and 6 re- 2, 2, and 3, 3, in the ledge 1, and bear against the inner wall of the box for a considerable distance down from the top.
While the end lugs 7, 7, approximately fit much narrower than the side notches 3, 3, @the reason for which is that the. remaining space afforded by these wide notches affords entrance or" clearance for the hooks '8, 8, of the hinged key or tongs 9, which are required in order to remove the cover, they being dropped through small holes 10, l0,in the side edges of the cover adjacent to the legs 7, 7. These holes-are intended to he so small, and the lugs so long that the cover cannot be removed, except as it is caught and lifted from the two side edges simultaneously andevenly, the holes 10, 10, being cover balances itself when it is raised and lowered by means of the key or tongs. In this way, l provide a simple but eiiective arrangement for preventing accidental tilting, displacement, or removal of the cover from a meter-box, thus avoiding the danger inci= to horses and pedestrians stepping or into the box, which is common with exercised in designing and conthe cover in order that it may maintain its place and yet yield readily to per tool for bringing about its reorn the box, or replacing it.
is evident that more or less slight t be resorted to in the form of the several parts det departure from the spirit my invention, and hence I do be i d to the exact conbut - a my invention, desire to' secure by I 3, oi? cover having e*l0n, 2;ated depending lags adapted to enter the notches and it closely the wall oi the box, the cover having holes at the centers of the opposite sides adjacent to the side lugs, and over the side notches in the ledge of the box.
