GRATE MECHANISM AND CLEARING MEANS THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM Form, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Dittersbach-Gruessau, Germany, have invented a new and useful Grate Mechanism and Clearing Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists of a novel construction of a grate mechanism and novel means for clearing the grate from any ash, clinkers or foreign material which has lodged therein and thus preventing the proper combustion of the fuel.
My invention further consists of a novel construction of a grate mechanism, a novel manner of mounting the same and novel means for affecting the dumping of the grate.
My invention further consists of a novel construction of ash clearing mechanism which is mounted in such a manner with respect to the grate proper that it may be readily reciprocated so that any clinkers or ash remaining between the grate bar members will be positively loosened and broken up in such a manner that they will fall into the ash pit of the furnace.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a grate and clearing mechanism therefor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a sectional elevation of Fig. 1 showing more clearly details of construct-ion.

Referring to the drawings, my novel grate construction and clearing mechanism therefor is adapted to be employed with any desired or conventional type of furnace or in all cases where a bed of fuel is supported upon a grate mechanism.
1 designates a supporting frame of any desired or conventional construction in which is pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the frame at 2, trunnions 3 which in the present instance are integral with the grate proper 41-. The members 8 are provided with laterally extending shoulders 5 forming bearings or guides and the underface of each of these trunnions or supporting members 3 is beveled, as seen at 6.
7 designates grate clearing members which are provided with upwardly extending teeth or prongs 8, having any desired contour and adapted to extend between the bars of the grate at. In the present instance, I employ two of the grate clearing members 7, the same being connected on each side by a rod or bar 9 whereby they will be moved in unison, it being best understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, that one of these bars is located approximately centrally of the grate, while the other grate clearing member is located near one end of the grate, whereby the grate clearing members will cooperate with the grate for substantially its entire length. The grate clearing members 7 are slidingly mounted on the support-s 3, it being seen that the upper portions of the members 7 are provided with laterally extending flanges 10, which seat on the shoulders 5, and are guided thereby, and the members 7 are recessed in order to conform to the contour of the lower end of the supporting members 3.
11 designates one or more arms one end of each of which is pivoted at 12 to one of the clearing members 7 while the other end thereof is mounted on a shaft 13 suitably journaled in the frame 14 of the furnace construction.
15 designates an arm mounted on the shaft 13 and provided with an actuating handle or lever 16 which may extend to any desired point convenient to the operator.
In the operation, when it is desired to clear the grate 4 of any ash, clinkers or foreign material. which is clogging the space between the grate bars, the lever 16 is actuated thereby rocking the arms 11 andcausing the grate clearing members 7 to move forwardly and rearwardly, the result of which is that any ash, foreign material or clinkers retained between the grate bar members will be broken up so that the same will fall into the ash pit of the furnace.
Special. attention is directed to the fact that the grate 4 is pivotally supported at 2, the pivotal point being on one side of the center of the gratewhereby when the handle; 16 is actuated to bring the grate clearing members 7 intothe position seen in'dotted lines, the grate will rock on its fulcrum 2 into the position seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the same may be readily dumped i with a:minimum-ameunt of labor.
Attention is further directed to the fact that-inm novel-construction the grate may be-cleared of ashes and also dumped by the same lelver or handle.
In accordance with my present invention, Ihave devised anovel and simplified construction of agitate mechanism and' 'cleanmg means therefor whichls of simple and compact construction and which may be economically built, the parts being-constructed'and arranged in such a manner that the clearing=members are not liable to becomedistorted or destroyed due to the heat from the bed of fuel, and my" device may be economically manufactured inpractice; The grate members and the teeth of the grate clearing members 7 may have any-desired contour and in order to show one construction which will give advantageousresults in practice. I have shown the results, it is to be understood that the. same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing for the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thusd eseribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a support, trunnions pivotally mounted therein and having laterally extending shoulders, a grate carried by said trunnions, a plurality'of grate clearing members adaptedto slide-on said shoulders and provided with teeth proj ectingqbetween the bars-ofthe grate, a rock shaft, arms connectingsaidrock shaft and one of said grate clearing-members," means.
