CUCKOO-CLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Application filed April 5, 1911. Serial No. 619,106.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEF SCHMIDT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Villingen, Baden, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Cuckoo- Clocks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a cuckoo-clock in which the striking mechanism of the clock at the striking of the hour and during the cry of the cuckoo puts in swinging motion birds or similar ornaments placed upon the surface of the clock. The swinging movement of these birds or other figures is obtained in such a manner that according to the number of figures or elements to be moved an equal number of elbow levers are provided which are connected on the one hand with the device actuating the bellows of the cuckoo-clock and on the other hand with the figures to be moved.
In the annexed drawings z-Figure 1 is an elevation of a cuckoo-clock, the movable parts of which are represented in the position which they assume during the striking of the clock. Fig. 2 shows the clock-work seen from behind, the parts being at rest. Fig. 3 is a similar view as Fig. 2, the parts being represented in the posit-ion which they assume during the striking of the clock.
The mechanism for the production of the cry of the cuckoo consists as usual of a wheel a, the revolving motion of which during the striking is transferred to the bellows 7L, z' by means of levers b, c, arms c, c and rods f, g. The cuckoo appears at the same time in an opening la of the clock.
According to this invention birds or similar figures l are arranged in the face of the clock adapted to be moved from the mech- 40 anism which produces the cry of the cuckoo. These figures 1 are fixed upon axles revolubly mounted in bearings m and connected with the rods f, g of the cuckoo mechanism by means of elbow levers n, 0 so that during 45 the revolving of the wheel o and the reciprocating motion of the rods j', g the elbow levers n, o are alternatingly stretched and bent where-from results a swinging movement of the birds or igures 1.
lhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved cuckoo-clock comprising in combination with the mechanism which produces the cry of the cuckoo, figures mounted on the face of the clock, bearings in the casing of the clock one for each figure, an axle of the figure revolubly mounted in said bearing, an elbow lever for each figure connccting the axle of the figure with the said mechanism for alternatingly revolving said axles in both directions so that a swinging movement is communicated to said figures, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEF SCHMIDT.
Witnesses AUGUST Oos'rEnMAN, MARIA HTTIG.
