HINGE.
Specification of Letters latent.
llatented Oct'. ,15, 1.912.
Application tiled February `21, 19,12.v Serial No. 679,106.
To all whom it may concern.:
Bo it known that I,v lViLLIAn L. MURPHY,
a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of the. city and countyY of San li`raneiseo and State ot California, have inventeiil certain new and useful improvements in Hinges, Ot' which the following is zyspecilication.
The invention relates to hinges for joining' and ivoting"together, two hollow or y'tubular members.
rlhe object ot' the inif'ention is to provide a .hinge which is not perceptible when the hinged members are alined.
Another object ot: the invention is to provide :i hinge vfor tubular or hollow ineinhers, Vwhich operates to allow the hinged ports to inoye thi nigh an angle o'i' ninety degrees to each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide i hinge, which when ,the two elements are in line, produces a .substantially rigid structu re. f
rl`he invention )')ossesses other advantages, which, with the foregoing will he set lorth at length in the 'li'ollowinisidescription, where l shall oiitliii.e"in t'ull that t'orni or eiiihodinient of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings.
he novell.)y ot' the invention will he ineluded in the claims sueeeedii'ig said description. From Vthis it will he ai'iparent that l do not; restrictmyself to the showing made by said drawings and descrii'ition as l muy adopt JuaniY variatioiiis within the seopo of luy invention as expressed in said elainis.
lhe hinge particularly adapted to he used in l'oliliiigr heds tor izoiinectine' the legs at tho t'oot. ot the hed to the hed traint and l have so iilustiated it in the drawings, hut it is to he understood that it may he used iii other eonsti-notions tor hinginijy together hollow or tuhular nienihers.
i'tetorriiig' to the, drawings: liilguro t is a side elei'iition ot' the l'oot of a. l'oldiiie' hed, partly elevated, showing the hinge oli in); invention, Fig. an ond View ofthe device as shown in l"i,';'. l, ttig. is a` sertion through the tuh'iilar ineinlnn'sI token at. the hinge, the two j .iifts heing shown toldei'h or :it right. angles to eaehother, Fig. lt is a, siniihii View .'slioii'ii'igg,V the parts .nlined :indi the lungo closed. liig. Fi is anexteruiil View ot' the el-fsed hinge tali'eii troni the right hund. side li" Since the hinge is partiiifulaily adopted to he used on heels, l will describe it in suoli connection. In folding heds it is desii-:ihlo that the legs at the :lioiit ol the hed shall told against the hed, when it is iii thel raised position, .so thal. the hed iiiay oi-ifiipy as sniall a space as possible. it is also desiriihle that; the eonneetion hetween ilie leg and the hed traine he substantially rigid when the hed is lowered and that the hinge he ooni'enled.
"l`he two hinged iiieiiihi-rs 2-3 may be respeelivelv the foot rail ot` the hed and the leg', tho fool. rail heilig rigidly eoiineetethto the side rails -l olI tho hed l'raiiie and beingA niovahlo with the hed l'raiiio. 'lhe upper iiioinher 2 is provided with an oai' or projeetion 5 haring;l :in eliminated-slot, (t therein which engages a pin i' arranged in the lower nieiiiher 2, said pin'T hiiig` the pivot ol thi` hinge. 'l'he lower ineniher 23 is provided with a sloty rl in line with the ear 5 and into which the ear inoves as the two nienihers more .in aliiieiiieiit.. 'l`he our 5 is provided with a shoulder t) whieh eng'ugjfes4 the onler surt'nee ot the4 lower iiien'iher 3 when the parts are iiiored to a suhstantially right angle position and holds the ports in sui-h position. 'l'he slot` t3 in the' ear iS of such length that when the pin 7 engages the lower end ot' the slot aiid the Shoulder t) engages the oiiter siirl'aee ot' the ineinber 3, the parts are suhstaiitizilly at right angles to each other. When the parts are alined and the pin engages the upper end of the slot the edges 12m-lil ot' the iiieiiihers are in Contact.
'l'he upper iiieiiiher :2 is provided with o. hipered projection ll eiioirrling the upper end ot' the ear which assists'in completely aliiiiiin the two parts so that they seat properly one iipon the other. This projection'll may ho toiiiied integral with the nieinher or it nia): he loriiied separately and secured iii the end ol' the iiiei'iiher. lhe preferable i: ii.stiiictioii would probably consist; in t'oriiiiiig' thil ear and the projection ,lll in one pieee and driving' theiii into place. The projection l-t tnhes its torni t'roiii the shape otl the tuhiilar iii iihors, thiit it' the ineinhei's were eylini'h'ioal it would he conical, and it' the ineiiihers were rectangular it would be pyruinidal. Other than Serving to :dine the nieinhers, the projection also increases the rigidity ol' the joint. The ear 5 is also formed that when the nitnibcrs are B-sr AVAILABLE corr alined, that side opposite the shoulder 9 lies close to the surface of the member, pre- Venting the .members from moving transversely with respect to each other.
I claim:
1. A hinge comprising a hollow member provide-d at one end with a slot, il SGC'Ond member, an ear projecting from said eeeond member'provided with a closed end slot, a. tapered projection at the base of said ear arranged to seat in said hollow7 member and a pin secured in said first member engaging in said closed end slot-` 2. A hinge comprising a hollow member provided at one end With a slot, a pin in said member arranged transversely of said slot, a second member, an ear projecting from said member provided With a slotl engaging said pin, a tapered projection at the base of said, ear adapte-d to seat in the hollow member and a shoulder on said ear adapted to lie in the slot in the hollow member' when the hinge is closed.
3. A joint for tubular frames, said joint including two abutting tubes, one4 of which has an open slot upon one end, a iat tongue fixed in the other tube extending into the slotted one and slidable therein, said tongue having a slot, a pin fixed inthe first mentioned tube upon which the tongue is movable, and a projection on the second tube arranged at the base of said tongue and adapted to engage in the first tube When the tubes are alined and the joint closed.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, Cal., this 14th day of February 1912.
In presence of- H. G. Plns'r,
R. HEFFERMAN.
