To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GooZEY, a Vcitizen of the United States, residing at l/Voonsocket, in `the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to boxes such as are designed more particularly to be carried in the pocket and to hold matches and exclude water and moisture therefrom; and it consistsin the simple, durable and efficient box, hereinafter described and claimed, adapted to be expeditiously and easily opened with one hand and as readily closed when occasion demands.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is an elevation of the box constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant, as the same appears when the closure cap and the packing are secured on the body and the packing is held under pressure against the open end of the body. Fig. 2 is a section taken through the box in the direction of its greatest thickness and showing the parts in the same position as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in edge elevation and partly in transverse Vsection of the upper portion of the box.

In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the box body 1 is preferably of general elliptical form in horizontal section, and is closed at its bottom and open at its top. On its edge portions the said body is provided with headed projections 2, and it `will also be noticed that from a point slightly below the headed projections 2 the edge portions of the body are flattened, as indicated by 3; the said flattened portions 3 extending to the upper and open end of the body for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
Movable bodily on and off the open end ofthe body 1 is the closure cap 4 of the box. The said cap 4 7is provided in its to-p with a slot 5 and in its ends with apertures 6. The slot 5 is `for the play of a pressure-lever 7, while the end apertures 6 are provided for thepassage of the upper portion of a hailshaped spring 8. The said bail-shaped springcomprises an upper portion that is slightly bowed upward and is provided with a longitudinal slot, as indicated by 9, and arms that depend from the ends of the said upper portion. The lower portionsy of 111e said arms are enlarged as indicated by l0, and the said enlargements are pivotally mounted on the headed projections 2 of the body. It will also be noted here that the enlargements 10 are flared inwardly, this with a view to bringing up against the body l and preventing the displacement of the closure cap 4, except in one direction.
Soldered or otherwise fxedly secured to the closure cap 4 is a flanged follower or pressure plate 11, and within the flange of said follower is arranged a body of packing 12 which may be of rubber Vor any ot er material suitable to the purpose, and may be secured within the flange in any approved manner. On its upper side the follower 11 is provided with apertured lugs 13. These lugs 13 are for the pivotal connection of the pressure lever 7, which extends through the slot 9 in the upper portion of the bail, and the slot 5 in the closure ca 4, and is provided below the bowed and s otted top portion of the bail-shaped spring 8 with a lateral projection or projections 14 designed to bear against the `under side of the slotted and bowed top portion of the spring. The upper end of the said pressure lever 7 is preferably roughened as illustrated, so as to afford a secure finger-hold.
In the practical useof my novel box, it will be manifest that when the closure cap is positioned on the body 1, and the lever 7 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the said lever by cooperating with the top portion of the bail-shaped spring and the follower 11 will have operated to crowd the packing 12 against the open end of the body so as to render the box thoroughly water-tight. The lever 7 will also serve in the position stated to lock the cap 4 and the follower 11 in their closed positions, this because when the lever is in the position shown in said ligure, the top portion of the bail-shaped spring 8 will exert downward pressure against the lever enlargements 10, and thereby prevent casual movement of the lever. When it is desired to open the box, the operator while holding the box in his left-hand for instance, is enabled to move the lever 7 with his thumb from the position shown in Fig. 1, to a osition at the opposite end of the slot 5. Vshen the lever is thus positioned the closure cap 4 can be moved upward on the top portion of the bail-shaped spring 8, and then the cap 4e andthe spring 8 can be swung together so as to carry the cap off the open end of the body and leave the matches in the box readily accessible. In closing the box the cap and the bail-shaped spring are swung together until the cap is positioned above the upper end of the body, and then the lever 7 is swung to the position shown in Fig. l, in which position it will remain in the manner and for the purpose before set forth.
When in closing my novel box the follower 11 is crowded down toward the open end of the body 1, it will be observed that the said end of the body will be embedded in the packing 12, and a perfectly watertight closure will be attained without injury to or deterioration of the packing. This is an important advantage inasmuch as it prolongs the usefulness of the box when the same is considered strictly as a watertight box.
I prefer to provide the enlargements 10 of the arms of the bail-shaped spring 8 with slots which are enlarged at their upper ends, as shown. By virtue of this provision it will be manifest that the enlarged portions of the slots can be pressed over the heads of the projections 2, and then the bailshaped spring can be manipulated so as to enable the narrow portions of the slots to receive the projections 2 after which the enlargements 10 can be bent as before described, so as to form the stops adapted to bring up against the body 1 with a view to preventing displacement of the closure cap in any direction except the one stated.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that an important feature of my invention residesk in the fact that when the box is closed there is no twisting movement, such as attends the screwing of a closure cap down, but on the other hand the pressure is a continuous downward or rectilinear movement. rIhe twisting movement referred to is objectionable because it requires two hands, one to hold the box body and the other the cap, and also because it brings about cutting of the packing and destroys the watertight quality of the box. When, however, the rectilinear movement referred to is employed the box can be readily opened and closed with one hand, and the packing is not cut through and impaired by the edge of the body, and hence the water-proof quality of the closure is not impaired even after long continuous use of the box.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and referred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining `myself to the said vspecific construction and relative arrangement of parts as such changes may be made in the future practice of the invention as do not involve departure from the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: v
1. In a box, the combination of a body open at one end, a bail-shaped spring pivoted at opposite points to the body and having its top portion slotted and bowed upward, a closure cap movable bodily on and olf the open end of the body and having apertures in its end portions receivingv in a loose manner the top portion of the bailshaped spring and also having a slot in its top, a follower fixedly secured in the closure cap and having a flange extending toward the body, packing carried by the follower within said flange and adapted to be opposed to the open end of the body, and a lever pivoted to the follower and extending through the slots of the bail-shaped spring and the closure cap and having a portion disposed below and adapted to bear against the inner side of said spring.
2. In a box, the combination of a body open at one end, a bail-shaped spring pivoted to the body and having its top portion slotted, a closure cap movable bodily on and olf the open end of the body and having end apertures loosely receiving the top portion of the spring and also having a slot in its top, a follower fixedly secured in the closure cap below the top portion of the spring and opposed to the open end of the body, and a lever pivoted to the follower and extending through the slots of the spring and the closure cap and having a portion disposed below the top portion of the spring.
3. In a box, the combination of a body open at one end, a bail-shaped spring pivoted to the body, a closure cap movable bodily on and 0H the open end of the body and movable on the top portion of said spring, a follower arranged in the closure cap and at the opposite side of the top portion of the spring, with reference to the top of the cap, and a lever connected to said follower and extending exteriorly of the cap and having a portion disposed below the top portion of the spring.

The combination in a box, of a body open at one end, a bail-shaped spring having arms on which are enlargements pivoted at opposite points to the body and having the said enlargements bent to form stops adapted to bring up against one side of the body, a follower arranged and movable between the bail-shaped spring and the open end of the body, a closure cap carrying the follower and a portion of the spring, and
means cooperating with the follower and the spring and the cap to close the open end of the body and retain the cap thereon.
5. The combination in a box, of a body open at one end, a hollow closure cap, a bailshaped spring having arms pivoted to the body and also having an intermediate portion extending through the hollow closure cap, a follower arranged and movable in the hollow cap and between the intermediate portion of the bail-shaped spring and the open end of the body, and means in the vmy hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
