Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 8, 1911. Serial No. 637,451.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. lVoLr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to buttons, and has for its primary object to provide a button in which the base may be readily and easily inserted in a button hole and held perinanently for retaining the button therein, thus obviating diflicnlty in the insertion of the button in a button hole in a shirt band, or other article of wearing apparel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a button which is formed of few parts, and is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a button constructed in accordance with the invention, the base thereof being shown in locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the base in parallel relation to the stud or shank of the button. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the button.
Similar' reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings by numerals, the button comprises an externally threaded shank 5 having a rigid or permanent head 6, the same being preferably of pear shape, although it may be of any other desirable shape. The free end of the shank has connected thereto a swinging base 7, the latter being of disk form and is formed with a lug 8, through which is passed a pivot pin 9, the same being also passed through the shank for hingedly connecting the base thereto and this lug 8 is formed with an external thread 8 providing a continuation of the thread on the shank 5, so that the locking washer or ring member can be adjusted on to the lug 8 for a purpose presently described. It will be evident that the base may be swung in parallel relation with and to one side of the shank 5, when it is desired to insert the base through a loutton hole in an article of clothing for the use of the button. After the base 7 is inserted through the button hole, the same is moved at right angles to the shank, and is locked in such position, in a manner presently described.
Adjustaloly engaging the externally threaded shank is a locking washer or ring member 10, which, when moved toward the base and engaged on the lug 8, will prevent the swinging of said base, on the pivot 9, thus sustaining the base at right angles to the shank and securely fastening the button in the button hole in an article of clothing, as the washer or ring member 10 is disposed at one side of the article of clothing and the base 7 at the opposite side thereof, thereby locking the shank in the button hole, as will be clearly obvious.
That is claimed is:
A button, comprising a head having a shank threaded throughout its extent and formed with a bifurcated end, a base, a lug of the same width as said shank formed centrally on the base projecting from one side thereof and entering said bifurcation and having' screw threads adapted to coperatie with the screw threads on the shank, a pivot connecting' the lug in the bifurcated end of the shank, whereby said base may swing in parallel relation thereto, and a disk surrounding the shank and engaging the threads, whereby the same may be screwed onto the bifurcated end of the shank for engagement with the lug to prevent swinging of the base.
