Letters Patent No. 104,079, dated Juno 7 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWINGJVIACHINE.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part ox' the same.
Bc it known that I, MONROE SWENY, of the county of Warren and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cutting or Sawing Oord- Wood into Fire or Stove-\Vootl; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature and object of my improvement consists in the construction and operation of a machine to facilitate the sawing of cord-wood into suitable lengths for the use of stoves, &c., a machine adapted to the use of the common buck or cross-cut saw.
The improvement consists in the combination of a system of leverage and mechanical power, so applied as to admit of one operator conducting and controlling all the movements requisite in sawing cord-wood with the increased ease, rapidity, and power of mechanism without shifting his position from one end of the machine, all the assistance required being the mere manual labor of placing or shitting the sawed wood from about the machine.
Heretofore the objection to such a machine has been the number of hands required to work them, owing, in a great measure, to the inconvenient position of their various mechanical apparatus, necessitating the movement of the operator from one part of the machine to another. By myinventiou such objection is obviated, as all the mechanical appliances are brought together, and can be put in force,by the ordinary muscular exertion of one man, without moving from one end of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of my machine;
Figure 2, the sawing apparatus or frame, in and out of position; y
Figure 3,*the lever for holding the cord-wood fast while being sawed; and
Figure 4, the pivot upon which the axle plays.
The letters A represent the frame ot the machine, of wood or other suitable material. y
B B is the buck, on which the Wood to be sawed is laid.
C O is thelever for holding the wood in its place on the buck, the arm next the buck being furnished with metal teeth to prevent slipping. It is held in position. by the-rarchet D at the other end of the machine.
E E is the guide for the saw-frame to work in.
F is the slide to which the saw G G is att-ached and fitted.
H is the pitman for driving the saw-frame.
I, the crank, connect-ing the pitman with the axle', which plays in pivot J, said pivot` relieving the axle from the weight of the guide E.
K is the lever for regulating the pressure and position of the saw.
L, a hook for holding lever K.
M is a guide for holding the saw in position.
N is a balance-wheel.
O, a cog-wheel; and
P, a crank.
'lhe wood to be sawn is placed upon thc buckB, the lever C is then pressed down with the foot, and secured by ratchet D. The saw is then adjusted by means of lever K,'and set in motion' by turning the crank I by hand or other power.
I claim as my invention- 1. The pivot J, in combination with guide E, slide F, ptman H, crank I, and saw G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of levers K and G, frame E,
slide F, saw G, pitman H, crank I, pivot J, wheels NV O, guide M, buck B and frame A', the. whole constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Vitnesses WM. 'l-I. RooKHILL, Gmo. W. CAREY,v
MONROE SWENY.
