JOSEPH E. QUEEN, OF STOCKERTS, VEST VIRGINIA.
GRIP MECHANESM FOR OPERATING SAWMILL SET-WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,571, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed September 6, 1902. Serial Ito- 122,350. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. QUEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockerts, in the county of Upshurand State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grip Mechanism for Operating Sawmill Set-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to machine elements, and particularly to the class of intermittent grip devices; and the object of the invention is to provide a sawmill set-wheel with a series of grips to hold the wheel under control of the operator as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a peculiar set-wheel, a series of grips, and a novel lever mechanism connected to a set-gage, so that the latter will indicate the position of a log relative to the saw and control the action of the grip-levers and in consequence the action of the grips on the setwheel.
Other objects, advantages, and improved results accruing from the general arrangement of the parts will be pointed out in the claim to follow.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the top grip. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the bottom grip. Fig. 5 is a detail section of the set-wheel. Fig. 6 is a detail section of the end of the pitman having springs.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The frame 1 is secured to the sill-pieces 2 of an ordinary sawmill-carriage, at right angles thereto, and upon which frame the logs rest while being worked and sawed up. The set-wheel 3 is loosely mounted on the shaft 4 and has peripheral side flanges 5 and a serrated periphery. To regulate and control the movement of the wheel 3, I provide three grips, which astraddle the wheel 3 and have shoes 6 to engage the periphery of the flanges 5 and a like pair of shoes 7 to en age the inpitman in its operation.
vided with a hand-lever 13 tooper'ate the ner edge of theflanges. The top grip 8 has a'pivot-post 9, provided with a spiral spring 10 to coiiperate with a plate-spring 11 on the head of a long pitman 12 and assist the This grip is progrip independent of the pitman 12. The end grip 1a is of the same construction as the top grip, except it has no spring or hand-lever, and a short pitman 15 connects this grip with one end of a cross-head 16 on a shaft 17, the long pitman being connected to the other end of the cross-head. At one end of the shaft 17 is secured an arm 18, working over a segment-gage 19,having a slot 20 for an adjustable stop 21 to limit the forward movement of the arm and a series of apertures 22 fora stop-pin 23 to limit the backward movement of said arm. This gage has graduationmarks to denote the thickness of the sawcut. The shaft 1'7 is operated by a hand-lever 25 to work the cross-head. A bottom grip 26 is hung from the frame 1 by a hanger 27, having stop-flanges 28 to limit the movement of this grip, and the latter is operated by a hand crank-lever 29.
The operation is as follows: The gage being set to cut a plank or board of a desired thickness, the hand-lever 25 is moved forward, and by such movement the cross-head, pi'tmen, and grips are operated, so that the shoes of the grips 8 are pushed into engagement, one with the periphery of the wheel and the other with the inner periphery of the wheel-flanges, and the shoes of the grip 14 are pulled into like engagement with the wheel and its flanges. Such pushing and pulling action will turn the wheel. When a reverse or backward movement is given the hand-lever 25, the grips are, simultaneously released, and the pitman-spring assists in such releasement of the grip 8, so that the latter will not engage the wheel sufficiently to move the latter backward. The grip 26, operated by the lever 29, is used as a supplemental means to assist the other grips, if required, in turning the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to seen're by Letters the flanges, and means to operate the cross Patent, is- 1 head. :o The cpmbination, with the set-wheel hav- In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand ing flanges, and the pitmen, of the end grip, in the presence of two witnesses. 5 the top grip, the spring carried by the top JOSEPH E.
