FEED-BAG.
To all 1071 am it may concern:
lie it known that I, JoI-IN DULKowsiu, a subject of the Czar of illSSltt, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of llennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lleed-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in feed bags, and more particularly to co1nbined feed bags and holders therefor, the object of the invention being to provide improvements of this character which support the bag on the harness of the animal, leaving the animal free to raise and lower his head, and relieving him of the weight to a great extent.
A further object is to provide improvements of this character in which the bag may be closed so as to secure grain for the next feeding, and the supporting means may be folded so that the bag will occupy but little space in the vehicle, but be ready for instant use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arral'igcments of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation, illustrating my improven'ients in operative position. Fig. 2, is a plan view of my improved device. Fig. 8, is a view illustrating my improvements in folded form. Fig. l, is a view showing the same partially open. Fig. 5, is an enlarged view in side elevation of the bag and its connected parts, and Fig. (3, is a view in section on the line (S-6 of Fig. 5.
1, represents my improved feed bag which is preferably of canvas or other flexible material, provided at its open end with two metal frames 2, connected by hinge pins 3, and provided with a spring-pressed locking pin 4t, so that the frames may be locked/together as is the case with an ordinary pocketbook, or they may be opened out in alinement forming a rectangular opening and holding the bag taut, so that the animal may easily feed. To limit this opening movement of the frames 2, 2, brackets 5 are located upon hinge pins 3, and are provided with inwardly projecting fingers 6 to engage under the frames when in open position as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

leaiwardly projecting bars 7 are secured to pins 5 and are bent inwardly at their rear ends, and secured to a transverse bar 8. Rearwardly projecting telescoping rods t) are connected to bar 8 by means of brackets 10, the latter being pivotally connected to bar 8 by means of rivets 11, and it will be noted that one of these brackets 10 is above, and the other below bar 8, so that the bars may be swung around side by side when folding the device.
The telescoping tubes 3) comprise two members, one tubular, and the other solid, fixed at various adjustments by means of thumb screws 12, and the free ends of these telescoping rods are made hook shape as shown at 13 to be positioned through eyes 14.- on hames 15 to support the bag in horizontal position. i\'letal links 16 are also conncctcd to pins 3, and to these links, the ends of a rope 17 are secured. This rope 17 is adapted to be passed over a pulley 18, having an eye 19 thereon to be caught over the ordinary saddle hook 20. ()n rope 17, snap hooks 21. are provided, and are adapted to be caught in the rein rings 22 (in the hames. By means of the telescoping rods 9, and the rope 17, the bag is held rigid, and its weight is supported by the harness, and not by the head of the horse as is customary with bags in general use. The animal may feed freely, raising and lowering its head at will. A handle 23 is secured to one of the frames 2, so that the bag and its attachments may be readily carrietjl.
1 3y reference to the several figures, it may be seen how the telescoping rods may be swung around onto bar 8, and the several parts folded together so as to occupy but little space in the wagon either when the bag is full of grain, or when it is empty.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrzmgement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spiritand scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the open end of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames,
, means on one frame adapted to engage the other frame for locking the frames together, a handle on one of said frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins. a transverse bar secured to said rearwardly projecting I bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said transverse bars, hooks on the ends of said telescoping rods, and flexible connecting means secured to said pins and adapted to engage the saddle hook of a harness, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the open end of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames, means on one frame adapted to engage the other frame for locking the frames together, a handle on one of said frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins, a transverse bar secured to said rearwardly projecting bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said trans verse bar, hooks on the ends of said tele scoping rods; flexible connecting means secured to said pins and adapted to engage the saddle hook of a harness, and hooks on said flexible device adapted to be caught in the rein rings of the hames, when the hooked ends of said telescoping rods are in the trace eyes of the hames, substantially as described.
4i. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the open end of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames, means on one frame adapted to engage the other frame for locking the frames together, a handle on one of said frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins, a transverse bar secured to said rearwardly projecting bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said transverse bar, and hooks on the ends of said telescoping rods, metal brackets secured on said pivot pins and inwardly projecting fingers on said brackets adapted to be engaged by said frames when the latter are in a horizontal or open position, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the open end of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames,
means on one frame adapted to engage the other'frame for locking the frames together, a handle on one of said frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins, a transverse bar secured to said rearwardly projecting bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said transverse bar, hooks on the ends of said telescoping rods, flexible connecting means secured to said pins and adapted to engage the saddle hook of a harness, metal brackets secured on said pivot pins, and inwardly projecting fingers on said brackets adapted to be engaged by said frames when. the latter are in a horizontal or open position, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the openend of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames, means for locking the frames together, a handle on one of said frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins, a transverse bar secured to said rearwardly projecting bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said transverse bar, hooks on the ends of said telescopingrods, flexible connecting means secured to said pins and adapted to engage the saddle hook of a harness, and hooks on said flexible device adapted to be caught in the rein rings of the hames, when the hooked ends of said telescoping rods are in the trace eyes of the hames, metal brackets secured on said pivot pins, and inwardly projecting fingers on said brackets adapted to be engaged by said frames when the latter are in a horizontal or open position, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a feed bag, metal frames secured to the open end of the feed bag, pivot pins connecting said metal frames, rearwardly projecting bars on said pins, a transverse bar connecting said rearwardly projecting bars, telescoping rods pivoted to said transverse bar, hooks on the ends of said telescoping rods, links pivoted on the pins, a pulley connected to the saddle hook of the harness, flexible connecting devices secured to the links and adapted to pass around the pulley, and hooks on said flexible devices adapted to be caught in the rein rings of the hames, when the hooked ends of the telescoping rods are in the trace eyes of the hames, substantially as described.
