- Letters Patent No. 104,062, dated .Tune 7, 1870.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR PITCHING- LAGER-BEER AND OTHER CASKS.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
l, H ENRY A. RaT'InInIANN, of the city of Cincinnati, county of vHamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain Machine to aid in the process 0f Pitching Lager-beer Gasks, Barrels, or other Vessels, and for washing and rinsing thc same, of which the following is a specification. i
Nature mul Object of thc Im'cntion.
The first part of my invention relates to the combination of certain wheels, in such a manner that a cask, barrel, or other vessel suspended in the main wheel, as hereinafter described, may be turned in adouble rotary motion, which brings every part of the same to 'a certain point, so that, by the law of gravitation, `an introduced tl'uid7 (heated pitch, glue, varnish, or any other article,) must flow over every'part ofthe inner surface of the same.
The object ot' this part of my invention is' to do away with the manual labor of rolling, shaking, and turning over thc ends of the Cask, barrel, or other vessel, and to perform this work with greater accuracy' and precision than by hand.
The second part ot' my invention relates to the propcess of coolingr down the heated cash or vessel by Inode ot' inserting an air-funnel into the bung-hole of the same, which, when the machine is in motion, will catch up the air andl force the same into the vessel. By opening the faucet-hole at pleasure, a circulation ot' the air inside the vessel is eiiected, by which the same may be cooled down as rapidly as desirable.
The object of this part of my invention is to complete the pitching or gluing of the Cask, barrel, or
' other 'vessel in a shortertime than now required,
where the same must cool down through the walls or sides of the vessel.
llhe pitch, by cooling from the inside, also gets a more smooth and glossy surface than by the old mode ot' cooling.'
The third part ol' my invention rel-.ttes to the washing and rinsing ot' the cash, barrel, or other vessel.
By Inode ot' various pulleys a fast or slow motion A speed may be attained by which, if the Cask, barrel, or vessel is partly filled with water, the same maybe eectnally washed or rinsed.
Description of thc Accompanying Dra-wing.
Figure lis a front view of a machine embodying my invention, together with a section ci' a barrel.
,Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figures 3 and -i are drawings of extra arms, which V.may he inserted into the machine tomahe the same adaptable to smaller-size barrels or vessels. Figure 5 is a drawing of the air-funnel.
General Description; A is the main wheel, which suspends the cash, barrel, or vessel X, which is hung ou the pivot of shaft H, attached to cog-wheel() on the one end, and 0n the pivot of screw Gr on the other end.
On the headings or ends of the barrel oreask are first rmly screwed, or otherwise fastened, the iron plates I and K, the first of which has a 'round pivothole, and the latter a square pivot-hole.
The main wheel A rests with its shoulders upon, and is held in its vertical position by the rollers E, which are groo'ved out to pass the cogs of the wheel within the groove.
D is the spur-wheel, which, by the aid of a belt on the pulley F, and through the transmission therefrom by shaft N, turns the wheel A on the rollers, and, consequently, the cask, barrel, or vessel with it.
The cog-wheel C is, at the same time, forced to run in the cogs of the crown-wheel B, which is permanently fastened to the frame M, and thereby forces the cask, barrel, or vessel to rotate at the same time around its own axle.
One or more arms, L, are fastened, as required, into the wheel A, to malte the same adaptable for smaller .or larger-size vessels. I
O is the air-funnel, which is inserted into the bunghole of the Cask, barrel, or vessel, in such a position that, if the machine is set in motion, the same will catch up the air and force the same into the cask, barrel, or vessel.
A double. or triple pulley, F, is attached to the spur-wheel, so that a fast or. slow motion may be given the machine at pleasure. I
The cog-wheel C and the crown-wheel B have a bevel gearing.
Claims.
l claim as my invention- The double rotary motion, as adapted to the'use of this machine.
Also, the combination of the wheels A, B, G, and
l), the shafts G and H, and the' rollers E, to effect this motion. l
Also, the arms L, for the purpose of making the machine adaptable to all sizes of casks, barrels, or
M, all,-of which is claimed substantially as and-for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
