To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLE CHRISTENSEN, of VVesterbrogade No. 36, Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, manufacturer, and CHRISTIAN PETER SoLBEoK, of Istedgade No. 45, Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, merchant, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Churn and Butter-VVorker and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of the present invention is a combined churn and butter worker, which is specially intended for minor dairy trade, eventually used as hand-churn.
It is characterized by the production of two different working-phases for each half revolution of the churn barrel. The eventually easily removable kneading device consists of three side by side lying rollers which work the butter in two alternating directions each corresponding to its half revolution of the barrel. The middle roller is fixed to the common shaft of the barrel and the kneading device, and during the churning the barrel and all the parts are coupled together in such a manner that they rotate with the angular velocity of the shaft while there is no reciprocal movement of the rollers. During the kneading, on the contrary, the barrel rotates slower, while the velocity of the shaft is constant with regard to the rollers, which are now turned mutually against each other.
A couple of alternative arrangements are shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section on the line AB in Fig. 2 through a machine with an oval barrel, Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the line CD in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line E-F in Fig. 4, through a machine with barrel formed container, which is revolved on a shaft parallel to the bottom, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line G-H in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is the outside view of the barrel shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the letter 0, indicates the oval churn barrel, 6, c and d the three rollers which are placed between the supporting part c and a central bottom plate f. The supporting part bears against the backwall g of the barrel and the bottom plate is let into a central opening in the front wall h. The parts 6 and f are supplied with a central hole or hearing for the shaft 7; which carries the roller 0 and with eccentrically placed bearings for the shafts and 7c of the rollers b and d. The three bearings in the disk f are suppliedwith stuffing-boxes.

When the machine has to be used for churning the driving shaft i is by means of the coupling arrangement 0 coupled to the pivot a carrying the barrel 9, a, h. When the driving shaft i is turned by means of the han d-wheel shown or by a belt device all the parts i. e. the barrel and. the kneading device will rotate with the angular velocity of the driving shaft, so that none of the pinions are in action.
WVhen the machine has to be used as butter worker the coupling 0 is disconnected as shown in Fig. 2. The revolution of the driving sh aft will then be transferred. to the barrel with diminished velocity through the pinion 8, the intermediate pinion t and the rim a while the roller 0 will keep the original velocity and the rollers b & dare revolved with the same velocity in relation to it by means of the pinions p, q & 1. Meanwhile the kneading device as a whole rotates at the same slow speed as the barrel itself and during each half revolution the kneading process shown in Fig. 1 occurs, since mainly only the two rollers b & c or (1 & c are alternatively in action. Vhen the coupling 0 is disconnected and the hand wheel removed, the

The arrangement shown in Figs. 3 to 5 differs from the now described arrangement in, that the barrel is shaped as an upright ordinary one, which is revolving on a horizontal shaft through the middle of the side walls and parallel with the bottoms of the barrel. Besides the kneading device is not directly removable, but the supporting piece e as shown in Fig. 4 is screwed to the wall of the barrel and the disk f is omitted, the stuffingboXes of the shafts i, and Zr: being in the wall of the barrel itself. Instead of the handwheel and the coupling device 0 one to the driving shaft "i fixed coupling branch 0 which may be coupled in a certain position by means of one to the rim u or another suitable place fiXed grip n mi ht for instance be used. Further the centraI pinion s and the intermediate pinion t are discarded and re placed with the following arrangement. The pinion q is connected with a special pinion t which gears in the rim u and thereby imarts the slow speed to the barrel during the rneading. The pinion g t in this case acts as an intermediate pinion, it being the pinion p that takes the art of the pinion s. For the sake of easy cfeaning one of the bottoms y may be removable as indicated in Fig. 3.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of this said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed we declare that what we claim is:
1. In a combined churn and butter worker, the combination with a receptacle of a central roller therein, rollers at the sides of said central roller, a central shaft carrying said central roller and being in direct connection with the driving device, means for driving the side rollers from the central shaft and means for coupling and uncoupling the receptacle and said central shaft.
2. In a combined churn and butter worker,
the combination with a churn barrel of a central roller therein, rollers at the sides of said central roller, a central shaft carrying said central roller, a driving member in direct connection with the driving shaft and means for transmitting the movement of the central shaft to the churn barrel at a reduced speed.
3. In a combined churn and butter worker, the combination with a churn barrel, of a central roller and two side rollers with bearings in the churn barrel, a centrally arranged driving device, means for transmitting the movement to the side rollers, and means for transmitting the movement at two speeds to the churn barrel, said barrel not being circular in the plane of rotation.
4. In a combined churn and butter worker, the combination with a receptacle, of a central driving shaft mounted therein, a roller carried by the shaft, rollers at the sides of the central roller, gearing connecting the central and side rollers, and gearing connecting the driving shaft and receptacle.
5. In a combined churn and butter worker, the combination with a receptacle, of a central driving shaft extending through the receptacle, a roller carried by the shaft, lateral shafts mounted in journals fixed to one side of the receptacle and extending through the latter parallel with. the driving shaft, rollers on the lateral shafts, gears connecting the driving and lateral shafts, a gear on the receptacle, gears connecting the latter gear with the driving shaft and a coupling. device to connect the shaft and receptacle.
