UNLOADING-BARGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct 8, 1912.
Application filed October 25, 1911. Serial No. 656,649.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Unloading-Barges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to unloading barges, and has for an object to provide a barge wherein coal or the like can be readily transferred therefrom to ocean vessels or the like with great rapidity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a form of hopper bottom for the barge which can be quickly removed from the barge when worn and replaced by a new bottom at a minimum cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for fixedly attaching the bottom to the barge.
Another object of the invention is to provide the barge with a discharge opening and a movable cut-oft and to construct the hopper of the bottom so that the material will be automatically discharged through the opening on the open adjustment of the cut- 0 In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev eral views :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the barge. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front view of the gate showing means adapted to hold the gate in its adjusted position.
The barge 1 may be of any suitable construction and configuration. As shown, it is of rectangular form and in one side it is provided with an opening 2 through which extends the discharge chute 3. A cut-off or gate 4 is slidably mounted against one side of the barge and itmay be adjusted to uncover or cover the opening 2 as the case may demand. The gate is preferably connected with an operating lever 5. This lever is mounted on the barge and the means 6 are adapted to engage the lever so that the gate can be held in its adjusted position. The barge is provided with a hopper bottom which includes a main portion 7 which extends the full length of the barge, as shown. The portion 7 may be constructed of sheet metal, and as shown, it is provided with the attaching flanges 8 which extend against the edges of the side and end walls respectively of the barge and securely fastened to the angle plates 9. The angle plates are secured, at 10, to the walls of the barge and each plate is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending stems 11 which are passed through the apertures 12 in the flanges 8. The stems are preferably threaded and the clamping nuts 13 which are engaged therewith may be brought to bear against the flanges 8 to securely hold the bottom operatively associated with the barge.
The portion 7 of the bottom is substantially of keystone configuration and it ex- 'tends downwardly from one side of the direction of the discharge opening 2. The bottom is provided with auxiliary portions 1 1. These portions are substantially of triangular configuration and they are fitted to the walls of the barge in a manner identical with the mode of attaching the portion 7 thereto as previously described. The auxiliary portions l i extend downwardly at an angle toward the major portion 7 of the bottom so that the common discharge of the hopper is immediately at the opening 2, thereby insuring an automatic discharge of the material when the gate 1 is opened. In view of the disposition of the auxiliary portions 141 of the bottom with respect to the major or main portion 7, gutters of substantially V configuration are formed at the points of intersection of the auxiliary portions with the said main portions, whereby to direct the material positively toward the discharge opening 2.
I claim:
A barge including a vessel of rectangular configuration, an angular plate straddling the top edges of the end, rear, and front walls and formed on their top face with upwardly extending stem portions, a discharge barge and in the line with the opening, and flanges carried opening for said vessel, a sectional bottom hopper forming a part of the vessel and including angularly disposed Walls, the said hopper having its discharge end rigidly in said stems, and means for rigidly securing the same to said vessel.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
NICHOLAS ROSE.
by each of the sections of the bottom and Witnesses: overlying the top of said angular plates and GEORGE KOCH, operatively receiving and connecting the JAMEs LEE.
