STORE-FRONT CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ERRETT S. Rnoaos and VERNON Ross, citizens of the United- States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Front Constructions, of which tlie'following is a specification.

This invention relates to store front constructions, and more particularly to improvements in means for securing plate glass reliably in place, our object being to produce simple, efficient and inexpensive appliances for this purpose of such construction that the parts may be readily and quickly assembled in operative position and enable one unskilled in the art to easily, quickly and properly secure plate glass in position.

To this end the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a vertical section of a store front construction embodying our invention.

As the bottom, top and sides of the window glass setting appliances are of precisely the same construction except in one or two particulars hereinafter mentioned, reference hereinafter will he made only to the lower part or bottom of the setting.

In the said drawing, 1 indicates the bottom or window sill and 2 the top or lintel of the window frame or casing of any suitable or preferred type.

3 indicates the floor of the window, the same being set back a suitable distance from the outer edge of the sill, and 4 indicates the top of the window, or the same may be in the form of a strip secured to the lintel in any suitable manner, the front edges of the floor 3 and top or strip 4 occupying the same vertical plane.

5 indicates ametallic sheathing or cornice for the sill outward of the floor 3, this sheathing or cornice being a dispensable element.

Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner member of the glass setting is in the form of a molding made from a single piece of sheet metal and consisting of a bottom or horizontal portion 6, a back or vertical portion 7, a gutter 8 forward of and adjacent to the upper margin of the back, and a wing 9 which projects forwardly and upwardly from the front wall of the gutter. The bottom or horizontal portion (3 is formed at its front edge with an upwardly bowed or hook portion 10. The back or vertical portion is provided with one or more forwardly projecting tongues 11 which are preferably stamped out of the back, and is also provided with a plurality of holes 12, through which screws 13 extend into the floor 3 to secure the member reliably in position. The gutter is provided with a plurality of drain holes 13 so that water may pass from the gutter down onto the bottom (3, and with openings 14 in its front wall through which screw bolts 15 extend downwardly and forwardly for a purpose which is hereinafter explained. The wing 9 extends forwardly as well as upwardly so that it shall apply an outward yielding pressure on the window light hereinafter referred to, and be susceptible of yielding inwardly to accommodate expansion of said window light. The outer member is made from a single strip of metal 16, of any desired cross sectional form. Its lower end rests upon the sheathing or cornice 5 forward of the bottom of the inner member and is provided with a rearwardly-proiccting upwardly-bowed portion or head 17, susceptible of engagement with the lower side of the upwardly bowed or hook portion 10 of the inner member, this connection anchoring the members together, and the upper end of the outer member terminates in a rearwardly projecting downwardly disposed hook 18, and interposed between wing 9 and hook 18 is the window light 19. For securing the hook 18 against outward movement, one or more keys are employed, the number being determined by the length of the members. Each key is arranged obliquely within the casing constituted by the mem bers, and consists of a central portion 20 which preferably stands at an angle corresponding to the front wall of the gutter, a

The downwardly bowed arm 21 rests upon portion 6 and against the underside of a tongue 11. The upper end of the bowed arm 22 fits snugly in the hook 18. By this arrangement it will be seen that the bolt is utilized to clamp the upper edge of the hook of the outer member 16 firmly against the outer face or the window light, the tongue of the inner member constituting an anchor for the key and the bowed arms 21 and 22 stiffen the key against buckling upward and rearward at its center.

To guard against downward movement of the window light, we provide the following construction for the bottom member of the casing: Q-l are U-shaped brackets resting upon bottom 6 and fitting between the bowed portion 10 thereof and the gutter so as to be incapable of back and forth creepage, the channel of the U-shaped bracket extending transversely or parallel with the window light. number of washers the block can be raised more or less to accommodate the window light, and resting upon the block and arranged between and projecting above the bracket is a leather or equivalent cushion 27 affording a direct support for the window light so that there will be no chance of the same being chipped or broken. In this connection it is desirable to state that the drain holes in the gutter occur in the side and top members of the casing as well as the bottom to provide for a more complete circulation of air into and out of the store room, this circulation being desirable as it tends to reduce the possibility of the window frosting in cold weather. lhe front member is rovided with drain holes 28 below the p ane of the openings produced in the wall 7, of the inner member by stamping the tongues 11 therefrom, these holes permitting water rising within the casing above the hook 10 to escape without contact with the woodwork, water standing below the upper side of said hook escaping by evaporation.

In Fig. 4, the bottom of the inner member is curved downward at its front margin to interlock with the beaded portion 17 of the outer member, the portion 6 being formed at suitable intervals with depressed portions 6* to restupon sheathing 5. In this construction all of the water except that which entersthe depressions will flow off the front of portion 6 through the drainholes 28, the water remaining in the depressions passing off by evaporation. In assembling the parts the upwardly bowed portion or bead of the outer member is sprung under the curved front end of arm 6 of the inner member, this connection guarding against separation of said members as long as the key is held properly in position.

From the above description it will be apparent that we have produced a store front construction embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and we wish it to be understood that while we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, we reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

lVe claim 1. A store front construction, comprising an inner member provided with a wing to engage the inner face of a window light and an arm to project outward beyond the adjacent edge of the window light and terminat- I ing in a bowed portion, an outer member provided at one edge with an inturned bowed portion fitting under and interlocked with the bowed portion of the inner member and at its other edge with a hook for en-- gagement with the outer face of the window light, a key arranged diagonally betweenthe said arm of the inner member and the window light and secured at one end in the hook of the outer member and at its other end to the inner member, and fastening means extending at right angles to the key and securing the same to the wing of the inner member and tending to clamp the hook edge of the outer member against the window light and the inturned or opposite edge in interlocked engagement with the bowed portion of the inner member; said outer member in the plane of the bowed portion of the inner member having one or more drain holes.

'2. A store front construction comprising an inner member provided with a wing to engage the inner face of a window light and an arm to project outward beyond the adj acent edge of the window light and terminating in a bowed portion, an outer member provided at one edge with an inturned bowed portion fitting under and interlocked with the bo d portion of the inner member and at its other edge with a hook for engagement with the outer face of the window light, a key arranged diagonally between the said arm of the inner member and the window light and secured at one end in the hook of the outer member and at its other end to the inner member, and fastening means extending at right angles tothe key and securing the same to the wing of the inner member and tending to clamp the hook edge of the outer member against the window light and the inturned or opposite edge in interlocked engagement with the bowed portion of the inner member; said outer memher in the plane of the bowed portion of the inner member having one or more drain holes; in combination with a channeled bracket resting upon the said arm of the inner member a block fitting in the channel and a cushion interposed between the block and the adjacent edge of the window light.
