UNITED s'mrns PATENT OFFICE.
BB'YSON D. HORTON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DE'IAOHAIBLY HOUNTING LA FUSE FORMED WITH TERMINALS OB CONTACTS OF KNIFE- BLADE TYPE.
Specification of Lemrs Patent.
'Patented Oct. s, 1912.
To all "whom it "may Be it known that I, BRYSON D. HORTON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State. of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Detachably Mounting a Fuse Formed with Terminals or Contacts of Knife-Blade Type, ofwhich the following, taken connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a complete description thereof.
My invention more particularly resides in the contact clips of the fuse block.
The object of my invention is to provide a readily adjustable clip which will insure proper electrical connection, insure the secure clamping of a terminal blade therebetween and be adapted to accommodate fuse terminals of variable thickness, so that electrical connection between the fuse terminal and clip will be positive and efficient. Fuse blocks equipped with clips formed in accordance with my present invention are articularly desirable where the same, when installed, would be subjected to considerable vibration or jarring, and no'matter in what position the fuse may be mounted it will withstand these adverse conditions.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one specific embodiment of my invention, the details of which may be altered without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a complete fuse embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the clip. Fig. 3 is an end view showing a terminal blade inserted therein.
In detail, the numeral 1 indicates a fuse block. 2 a fuse provided with terminals 3, which are of flat knife blade formation.
4 indicates the terminal cli The terminal clip is preferably made rom a single blank of sheet metal, the ends of which are bent up into the form of a air of spring tension jaws, 5 and 6. The re ative distance between these jaws is such that a maximum size fuse blade may be accommodated therebetween. If, however, a fuse blade of smaller cross section is to be mounted, I have provided adjustable means for altering or varying the relative osition of these jaws with respect to the biitde intended to be used; so that the space between the jaws maybe narrowed in order to effect a good electrical as well as retaining connection between the members and blade. This adjustmg means comprises a pair of compression plates 7 and 8. These compression .plates are provided at their lower extremities with inturned reducedportions or fin ers 9 which are positioned in suitable slots in the lower extremities of the spring jaws. The upper ends of the compression plates are in-turned as shown at 10, the in-turned edges of which contact with the jaws approximately at a central line of the effective zone of the jaws,
so that the pressure is centrally applied and distributed.
The means of adjusting the parts consists of a screw bolt 11, which projects through suitable openings in the jaws and compresslon plates. The screw bolt is provided with a head 12 which engages the compression plate 7 and is preferably permanently fastened thereto by means of solder or otherwise. The opposite end of the bolt has mounted thereon a screw-threaded nut 13,
having a knurled head which enga es the compression plate 8, and by means 0 which varyin degrees of pressure may be applied throug the compression plates to the jaws of the clip in order to vary the relative distance between the two, so that an eflicient connection may be made with any particular size of terminal that might be positioned therebetween. The end of the screw-thread ed bolt is flattened at 13 in order to prevent the separation of the nut therefrom.
14 indicates an in-turned lip stamped from the jaw 6, which is adapted to extend over the top of the fuse terminal when in positlon and serves to positively retain the fuse in place when the nut 13 is screwed up tight.
The lower end of the clip is provided with a perforation 15 by means of which the clip may be mounted in the fuse-block 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fuse-clip comprising a pair of integral sprlng-actln members, means adjustably mounted with respect to said members whereby the relative distance between them may be varied to accommodate variable thicknesses of fuse terminals, and means for positively retaining the fuse te'rminalswhen the adjustment is made.
2. A fuse-clip comprising a pair of integral spring contact members, adjustable means for applying pressure to the members to regulate the relative distance between them, and a projection on one of said members adapted to engage and hold the fuse terminal in place.
3; The combination with an electric fuse having a relatively flat or knife-shaped terminal, a terminal clip cooperatin' therewith comprising a pair of slotted yie dable contact jaws and means for adjusting the jaws with respect to'the fuse terminal, said means comprising a pair of compression plates bearing against the side of the jaws, said plates being provided with reduced end portions extending through the slots in the jaws, and a screw-threading adjusting bolt extending through the jaws.-
4c. The combination with an electric fuse having a relatively fiat knife-shaped terminal, of a terminal clip formed of a single I piece of metal having a supporting portion a slotted, bowed spring portion, and free ends substantially parallel with each other forming contact jaws, means for adjusting the contact jaws with respect to the fuse terminal, said means comprising a pair of compression plates, one end of each plate being mounted in the slot of the bowed portion of the clip and the opposite end of each plate being inturned and in contact with a jaw of the clip, and means for tensioning the plates to adjust the jaws of the clip.
' In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BRYSON D. HORTON.
