To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. SMITH, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the 'county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Type-'Writlng Machines, of which the following is a specification. i
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to type carriers and to means for attaching type blocks thereto.
The main object of the inventlon, generally st-ated, is to provide simple and eificient means for 'attaching type ,blocks to type bars or carriers, and to provide a construction which may be manufacturedl at a. small cost andmloy which the type bar and block may be i'e'adily and eificlently united. p
Afurther object of my inventlon 1s to provide means of the character speclfied m which an adjustment of the type blocks onthe type bars or carriers may be eifected.
To the above and other vends which will appear from the following specificatlon, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended -claims In the accompanying drawmgs, whereln like .reference characters -indicate o corresponding parts in the various views, Figure 1 is a detail side .view of a type bar and type block embodying my invention. vReferring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, it will be seen that the upper or front edge of the type bar is fiat or straight at points 4 and that mtermediate these flatportions are upwardly extending integral lugs, studs or projections 5 which extend from the front edge of the bar. By this arrangement a limited exte'nt of adjustment of the .type block on the type bar, and longitndinally of the latter, may be etfected before the block is secured in place; whereas each side member 9 of the type block bears against the side of the type bar to prvent any lateral movement of the block relatively to the bar but aiford an adjnstmentof the block longitudinally of the bar. When the type block has been placed in position straddlingthebaras shown, and with the portions 5 of the type bar received in the openings 10 in the block, after the block is'adjnsted to proper positionon the bar, a suitable tool may be employed to expand the metal from which each projection 5 is formed, so a to provide a head 01' laterally extending'bnr '11 which overlaps the type block and closes the month of the corresponding opening 10, as shown in- Fig.
This causes the type bar and block to interlockwith each other and causes the type block-'to be secnrely fastened to the bar. It
nnderstoojd that when each projection 5 on the type bar -yis headed, as at 11, to close the assoiate', opening 10 in the manner described, the type block will be securely held\ against detachment from or The bottom wall of lthe long'itudinal slot 7 in the block will at this time be firmly held against the flat- -"tened portionsa on the'type bar. In short the body portion of the block bears against the front edge of the bar so that there is no tendency to di'slodge the block from the bar nor to strain and loosen the headed connection by the impact of the block against the platen. Moreover, it will be understood that the openings 10 in the type block extend at snbst'antially right angles to the length of the slot i" therein, so that the projections 5 limit the sliding adjustnient of the block longitudinally of the bar, and prevent v the'block from being withdrawn from the bar longitndinally IthereOf.
In Figs. 5, .6 and 7 I have shown the modified form of construction in which the openings 10a extend to the front face 12 of the type block 6a, and the inner' walls of each opening 10a are inclined npwardly and outwardly at the upper portions thereof, as indica'ted at 13 in F ig. 6. Each stnd, lug or projection 5a which is received within an opening 10a extends to a point where it is flush with the front face 12 of the block. Afterlthe block is inserted in place on the bar landad'iusted longitndinally thereof, afsuitable tool maybe employedto expand the metalufrom which the projections 5a are formed-,- as indicvated in Fig..6. If desired, the metal o'f the projections 5a may 'be split three types 8 or 8u on a bar and twofastening stnds 5 or 5n which connect each block to its bar. In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown a type block 6b provided with but two types 8b. In this construction a single opening 10h extends transversely through the type block and receives a stud, lugr or projection 5b which extends from the front edge of the type bar 1b and is headed or riveted over the month of the opening 10'), as indicated at 11h, to effect an interlockingr engagement between theztype bar and type block. Like the constructions shown in the preceding figures the type block shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is slotted to receive and straddle the type bar. In'this modified form of construction, like those shown in the preceding fignres, the stud 5b is smaller, considered longitndinally of the type bar, than the opening 10b in which it is received, so to a'lford an adjustment of the type block on the type bar longitudinally of the latter. Moreover,
the integral stud 5b on the type bar is received in an opening in the type block 6b intermediate the types thereon.
' From the foregoing description it will be nnderstood that I have provided simple and. eiicient means for effectively connecting a type block to a. type bar or carricr and that the construction is such that it cnables the parts to be made at eoniparatively small cost and there is no liability of a type block bcing-accidentally displaccd on or from the bar after the block is secured in place. It will be seen that the type bar, the type block and t-he means by which the two are connected comprise only two members. the block and the bar, and that. 'these two members are forined for interlocking engagement with each other in such a manner that the block may be' rigidly'secnred to the bar. There are no screws or threadcd conncetions for a-ttaching one member to the other and the simplicity of the construction enablcs it to be made at small cost'without, however, detracting from the eifectiveness of the constrnction.
Various changes may be made .without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a type bar; and a type block, the body of the type block bearing against the body of the type bar and one of said members having an opening therethrongh and the other member having a prevent a detachment of' the an integral part that extends through said opening and is enlarged at the mouth of the opening to form an interlocking engagementbetween the type bar and the type block. v
2. The combination of a type bar; and a type block, the type block having an opening that extends transversely therethrough, and the type bar having an integral part that extends through Said opening and is headed at its end to effect an interlocking ngagement between the type block and type ar. 3. The combination of a type bar;`and a type block having a-n opening theret-hrough and thro-ugh which a part of the type bar extends, the said part of the type bar being expanded or headed over' the opening to type'block from the bar. i
4. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; anda type block' having4 an opening extending transversely therethrough and through which opening' said Stud extends, the end of said studbeing headed at the mouth of the opening to prevent a detachment of the type block from the bar.
5. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; and a type block having a plurality of types thereon and having an opening which extends transverselyethrough the block between types thereon, Said Stud being expanded at the mouth ofsaid openmg from the bar.
6. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; and a type block having an opening extending transversely therethrough and through whlch' opening said Stud 'extends, said Stud being smaller than the hole in which it is received to afford a limited adjustnient of the block on the bar, and the end of the Stud being headed at the mouth of the opening to prevent a detachment of the blockfrom the bar.
-7. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; and a type block bifurcated to Straddle the bar and having an opening'extending transversely through the block, the Stud being received in Sald opening and being headed at the outer'end thereof to prevent a detachment of the block from the bar. f
8. The combination offla type bar having an integral Stud; and a, type block bifur cated to straddle the bar and having an -block at Substantially afford ,longitudinally' of the bar, the end of the to prevent a detachment of the block' opening extending transversely th'rough the block, the Stud belng smaller' than said opening 'to aiford a. limited adjustment of the block on the bar, and' the studbeing headed at the mouth of the opening to prevent a detachment of the block from the' bar.
9. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; and a type block bifurcated to Straddle the bar and having an opening extending transversely through the rivht angles to the length of the slot formed by the bifurcation in the block, the Stud being smaller or shorter in the direction of the length of the bar than the length of the said transverse openin to a limited adjustment of the b ock Stud being expanded at the mout-h of said opening to prevent a detachment of the blockfrom the bar. w 10. The combination of a type bar having an integral Stud; and a type block bifurlcated to Straddlethe type bar and having a plurality of types thereon, Said block also having an opening between types, which opening extends transversely through the block at subst-antially right angles to the length of the slot formed by the bifurcation in the block, the said Stud extending into said openin and being smaller, considered longitudinal y of the bar, than the trans,- Verse opening to aiford a limited adjustment of the block on the bar, a-nd the Stud being expandedat the mouth .of the opening in the block 'to prevent a detachment of the block from the bar.
11. The combination of a type bar having parallel Sides atthe end where 'the block is connected with the bar, and also having an integral lug projecting from the upper or front edge of the bar; and a type block which is Slotted to receive the parallel Sided portion of the bar and has a t-ransverse opening therethrough to receive the Stud on the edge of the bar, Said Stud being expanded at. the mouth of the opening `.in the block to prevent the block from being detached from the bar.
